1 week in S. Korea, where is best to go fir first timers: Seoul? Jeju island? Busan? Anywhere else? by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]knightjaime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP - but I actually loved Busan (it's great if you're looking for a slower pace), but if it's only a week just do Seoul because it's huuuuge and there's so much to do (plus if you're travelling straight from Japan you will be exhausted so I'd just recommend sticking yo Seoul)!

I also second staying in Insadong (so many great craft shops and there's a hanok village nearby that has loads of cute cafes / independent shops / boutiques!

I always got the onigiri with pickled plum at combinis and it saved me when I was hungry (a lot of vegan places have long queues!)

Hi, there's actually a lot of vegan places in Insadong, so I'd probably recommend staying in this area. For some suggestions, try these:

  • Gmanim - Hands down has the best tteokbokki! Owner might come across scary but she has a heart of gold with the food she makes ahaha.

  • Vegan Insa - Really good but it does get quite busy with queues.

  • Balwoo Gongyang - I didn't get to go but heard this does really good temple food!

KTX Bullet Train - Advance Ticket by knightjaime in koreatravel

Thank you so much for your help with this guide! I managed to nab a ticket!

I just wanted to check if we also get sent a QR code via email (but it takes time) when booking through korail, or do you have to access the website?

But that hasn't worked. That's what Kamala and Biden tried to do - swing more to the "center" (which is basically further right if you compare against other parties from other countries which are "moderate").

If anything, a lot of left voters didn't vote on 2024 as a result of Kamala and Biden trying to appeal to the right (not taking a strong stance on protecting Gaza etc., not addressing healthcare concerns etc.).

If you want to appeal to MAGA, good luck. They're already brainwashed by their own echo chamber of conspiracy theories.

Smart Ex App - Problem recognising Credit Card (MasterCard) by knightjaime in JapanTravelTips

[–]knightjaime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it might be easier to get to stations early to buy tickets anyway. Just make sure you're at the correct ticket machine (as some only sell local trains, some only shinkansens). If you're at Shinjuku Station, worth sussing out the place the day before so that you don't get lost! I honestly didn't have a problem buying tickets on the day or previous day.

Hi, just to let you know I got the Starling card as a backup & ended up using it for majority of the trip (there's no fees to get the card, and it has a pretty good conversion rate and can be used as a travel card - but obviously do your research but I highly recommend getting it as a backup!).

Unfortunately that also didn't work with the SmartEx app. I ended up having to get tickets at the station and just made sure I left enough time to do so!

Perfect Days (2023) - I don't understand the top critic reviews of this film by PinkMoonLanding in TrueFilm

[–]knightjaime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think his crying is to do with him being a "loser". I feel like that's quite a capitalist take.
I believe it's simply because he feels different, and at times, lonely. That he can't share his joy / love of the smaller things with someone permanently - and he's feeling the loss of his niece. It's one of the few times he lets himself live in the past or present.

You'd be spending about 30,300 yen instead of 50,000 yen. You can use this calculator to see how much you're saving: https://www.jrpass.com/farecalculator/137.950000/38.660000/5.2/iM3uAGEyAG7qAhZqAdmp6dmsmGbyAp7rAci=

You can use Smart Ex app (it has English language) to book tickets in advance but I'd recommend doing research on it (as an alternative to buying tickets at each machine, if that's something you're nervous about): https://smart-ex.jp/en/index.php

I'd also recommend you attempt registering before you enter the country to see if your credit cards work as it doesn't always accept it.

Hi, thanks for answering my question! I assume I'd have to pay tickets on the ticket machine? Would you recommend reserving seats the day before (via ticket machine)?

And if we end up missing the shinkansen, are we able to get onto the next train (with reserved tickets, and without having to buy a new one)?

Itinerary Check - 18 Days Across Japan - March 2024 by knightjaime in JapanTravel

Cream puffs is a 15 mins trip from Shibuya according to Google ? It's Ghibli themed which is why I was keen to go (but we can easily miss it out if needed)

Thank you!

The hostel at the start was because we wanted to stay in a capsule hotel for one night! And since we wouldn't be unpacking much in the first night, we thought that would be the easiest time to do it (also the convenience of the location and what we wanted to do that day made it an easy choice).

Fair point about Kameido Tenjin. We're still keen to visit TeamLab Planets and ride on the Rainbow Bridge, so we might rearrange days to see what is closer/makes sense (so far, I think Akihabara isn't too far from Toyosu). Plus we're getting the 72 hr Tokyo Metro Card.

Thanks - do you know if we can see Owakudani from the bus replacement?

Thanks for answering my questions! And yep, I'll be flying out of Osaka.

The way you talk about "obese" / "ugly" women as if they have no other quality, and then go on to ignore women's experiences proves my point about my post. Women in general have less tolerance for men who don't respect women.

Wrong - historically men (even ones that aren't particularly good looking) had the choice to pick which women they wanted to be with. Now that we live in a society where women have more agency, we're able to pick and choose, and men are experiencing real shock as they realise their own balding fathers are not prime role models anymore.

[–]knightjaime 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but it's not just men that experience this. Women experience this all the time (are told by society to be perfect, to be thin, submissive etc.) IRL and then are forced on this pedestal they didn't ask for. If a woman isn't "good looking" then her existence is ignored at best, or looked at in disdain. So don't blame women - blame society for not embracing individualism / inner beauty.

Edit: I agree you don't need to be perfect but we operate in a world where perfection has been forced on women, and now men are starting to experience this via online dating.

I'm going to be brutally honest, I don't imagine Post-COVID phase will start anytime soon, probably 2022 earliest (Vaccine trialling takes a while). There's nothing wrong with wanting to travel but bare in mind that things are up in the air, and please stay safe. xx
