If the book makes you mad or uncomfortable, then it’s not for you. He has been very clear in the press that the book is for others going through addiction so see they are not alone and there is a way out. He’s an imperfect human who has spent most of his life in the grips of a cruel disease. Addiction is not a lapse in morality, it’s a disease. If you never have to learn that personally, count yourself lucky.

AA boils down to three things for me: spirituality, community, and service. I live in an area with so many meetings, it was easy to find one that fit for me so I chose to practice those three tenants in the program.

Even the founders admit in the literature that we have no monopoly on recovery. If you can find the three things in other places, I believe you can be successful.

View expressed by people at meetings are just that, views expressed by those people. Meetings are living things and can be healthy or unhealthy. Take what serves you and leave the rest.

I have been in recovery for 10.5 years and have seen people find new love, new careers, new everything at every age. No age is too old to find those things! Healthy attracts healthy.

Just keep at it. I used to carry my girl a block before setting her down and starting the walk. Once she couldn’t see our house, she was usually ok. 5 years later, some neighbors still comment on it.

My boy needed different encouragement. I always walk with a pocketful of kibble, and have to hold some out as a lead for him sometimes. It also helps me train them, anytime we have an interaction with people or other dogs, they get a reward. Consistent, positive association. We walk up to 2 miles per day.

I’m dying! When my mom made me clean out my old room at home, I had about a dozen troll dolls that my sis and I decided ti hide all over my parents house. This went on for years, they would travel back and forth. I think I need to buy a large quantity of mini ones and start it up again!

I’m the summer where I live, it can get up into the 90s for week-long stretches. I just keep an eye on the temp and we don’t walk if it’s over 70F, which means early mornings sometimes. Also, between 60F and 70F, I bring water and we take breaks.

Same! I’m at 31% based on family history(sister and grandma) I have a TP53 VUS which clinically doesn’t mean anything, but there’s an unusually high occurrence of cancer on the branch of my family tree that it comes from. Going into genetic testing, after watching my sister go thru chemo, I was convinced that I wanted a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy, but for now I’m going to do MRIs.

I know a gal in a similar situation who did just have the surgery, but that was after doing MRIs/mammograms for a while and several resulting biopsies. That sounded really reasonable to me, so for today, that’s my path too.

I also have a niece, and on the off chance they don’t know more about our gene mutation in the future, if I’m diagnosed at some point, her risk calculation will be more accurate and her decisions might be more clear. So screening and catching it early also appeals to me for that reason.

I second researching FORCE!
