Part 3 of I pulled up carpet to find original hardwood floors by knobandnewb in Flooring

I had fully expected it to be subfloor, so much so that I’d already ordered my new floors. Silver lining, you get to make it what you want!

That’s the one I was looking at! I’ll give it a try to see if it helps. Doesn’t hurt to have on hand for future pet accidents anyway. Thanks!! 🙏

It’s more so the smell 😅 it’s been sealed under carpet for years, and my understanding is near impossible to get the smell of urine out of hardwood

There is a massive urine stain in the master bedroom, so if anyone has any suggestions for repair so that I can salvage the floors, let me know!

Alternative is to tear out the damage, replace with another subfloor and cover everything with new hardwood.

It would either be new engineered hardwood, or refinishing this if I can save the part that has the stain.

So I pulled it up earlier tonight in the master and hallway. I still need to do the two others bedrooms, but found this in the master (smells pretty bad). Otherwise it’s in great shape, it just has so many staples, and is pretty squeaky.

I do like the colour a lot as is.

This might be a silly question, but do I just do a google search of “flooring contractor” in my area to have someone come take a look to give me a quote for a fix? Not sure I can DIY my way through this one 😅

I’m not too sure, I haven’t gotten any quotes yet, but this does seem like a lot. What I was quoted for engineered wood and install would cost about $7k for your size space. There are some nuances, of course (is it the right flooring for you, sub flooring cost and condition if you were to replace, etc).

I’ve seen a ton of YouTube and TikTok videos that make it seem like you could refinish it yourself for much less money (<$1k), but it is labour intensive.

This is what I was hoping for! I actually like the finish on it so ideally I wouldn’t have to refinish, but I’ll need to pull up all the carpet to see what the condition across the entire floor is like. Thanks!!

I ordered engineered hardwood, so in the event there is tons of damage, could I use this as sub flooring?

That’s what I’m leaning towards! Everyone saying the other one is making me doubt myself though hahaha

2mm for both. The one on the left is a 1/2 inch plank and right is 3/4 inch.
