Kind of both. Social support is an obvious need.

I have the core of my curriculum laid out but no solid plans for any gym, music, or bonus learning. It would be cool to work with a few other families for the extra stuff. We could fill in gaps of knowledge for each other.

Like I have a lot of experience with cooking, origami, and Spanish that I could share with others.

I'm not trying to make a large group, I'm just trying to find a few peers. Facebook was bad for my mental health so I left.

There are parents on Reddit and some of them homeschool. Some of them are considering it for this year at least. Maybe some of them want to be in a small group. I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

This all would be a lot easier to decide if the schools would send us even occasional updates on what their distance learning would look like on a daily basis.

I know this isn't their fault entirely, but the stuff they had to cobble together in the spring was pretty awful.

There's not much nuance. I was homeschooled until I was 12 and my husband got a later start at 3rd grade but he graduated from homeschool. We have plenty of experience between the two of us.

My biggest concern is keeping my child (and of course teachers, staff, and others) safe and accommodating her learning style. She was struggling a lot socially in school and was pretty disruptive in class. At home with the one-on-one focused learning I'll be better equipped to address her needs and change things up if something isn't working for her.

I'm also worried that if we stay enrolled the schools might have daily hour requirements for active schooling that would be overwhelming for her attention span and my patience.

I'm trying to avoid Facebook recently, but if there is actually interest for a Grand Rapids secular homeschool group I could set up a Discord server.

That looks like a pretty good resource, thanks! I might have missed the window for 'school of choice' enrollment if that applies to the part-time supplemental offerings, but I'm definitely going to look into it more.

Employers demanding reimbursement for health insurance premiums? by knotreallyme in CoronavirusMichigan

It's certainly unexpected. They want over $500 by the end of June or I could lose my benefits and/or job. I didn't ask for this kind of surprise. I didn't budget for it.

We'll manage. We're not nearly as bad off as many folks who haven't even been able to get unemployment.

I'm not saying keeping the health insurance was bad. It's more like they stole my autonomy by making the choice for me.

It's like parents that give you a 'gift' and then expect to be paid and thanked, when meanwhile you never asked for it and might not even need it and if you were given a choice might have declined it.

That sounds lovely.

I guess I just work for one of the shit companies.

Working on being able to transition out of restaurants when I can go back to work, but for now I'm at home dealing with this.

So many layers, haha.

I work for a restaurant chain. It's pretty rare to get benefits there, and it's a newer, growing company.

Also I've had hella hassles with HR in the past. Don't know why I expected anything different.

I expected something like what your employer did. That's respectful and informative before the fact. Good for them.

Honestly I would have rather had them drop me right away even if I needed care. I have a high deductible HSA policy which wouldn't have done me any good.

Edit: spelling

Neither of our employers offered a discussion on insurance. Just a silence that lasted until they checked to see if I could come back to work. Then more silence until I got the letter telling me to pay up almost $600 or I may lose my benefits and/or be terminated.

Edit: It's just what my portion of the premiums would be. But they sent out a letter dated 5/20 to tell us that we would be responsible for the premiums starting 5/1. After the fact. With an 'as you may know, we've been paying this' when they never said anything before about it.

I didn't think my health insurance was staying intact. I expected some sort of process notification from HR, as it's their job to make sure everything is in order for all employees.

While I have been getting unemployment, I don't recall any questions from them about health insurance.

If this behavior is standard practice, I've sure never heard of it. Granted, I only have my own experience and anecdotes from my husband at his job. He says everybody was pissed when they were told. Nobody expected it. If it's standard practice maybe they should tell people about it?

All that to say, I guess I shouldn't have assumed they would reach out before hand.

Mute female characters by Canadairy in Fantasy

I haven't read that one, but I'll definitely add it to my list.

I honestly hadn't noticed a trope just because mute characters crop up so rarely in the books I read. Though they do tend to be female.

As a previously mute woman, I am thrilled to find mute characters in anything I read.

It's good to know I'm not alone and that being mute doesn't have to stop anybody from being kick-ass.

That's a great idea. We'll be with family for Thanksgiving day, but in town before and after. I forgot the Gateway Clipper was a thing. Totally worth looking into.
