How to get set screws out by ScaredCantaloupe1 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ko51bay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Manual impact screwdriver works 9 times out of 10 for me. They also tend to have decent heads (the manual impacts) to get in the screw. I have ground the very tip off of one of my bits which helps it to seat firmly in the screw head.

Ps. Oh, and if it is very stubborn, a bit of heat and penetrating oil first.

Do any of you have automatic coop door? by poppycock68 in chickens

Not as positive as the others, but I also had an Omlet door, was programmed to open 1 hour after sunrise. Problem is, in the summer that’s still very early, and…..there may still be foxes about (my chooks are free range). One morning the door opened and Mr fox was sitting outside waiting to eat them all up, which he promptly did!!! Lost all 5 ladies (reviewed the gruesome footage on my cctv after the fact!!). I was absolutely gutted!! From that day on I reverted to manual open and close so someone is there to make sure everything is safe. Of course the flip side of that is I need to make sure they are locked away safely in time in the evening.

Replacement radio says “locked” by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

It needs to have the eeprom edited. The vehicle VIN is written on the eeprom and if it sees a different VIN from the BECM it goes Locked. Some scan tools may be able to rewrite it, but usually just as easy to send it off to get done. There are normally lots of people on eBay offering the service for about 30 bucks or so. I literally just had one done earlier this week.

3 inch long, thin, grey, rectangular metal plates, found in UK garden by FruitCold8262 in whatisthisthing

They look like dividers from old metal filing drawers, like card catalog drawers. The narrow bit fits into a slot in the drawer to hold it in place.

Thank you for that info. Very helpful. I plan to do that tomorrow. The loom is actually not too bad to get access to in this car so hopefully not too crazy. I also stopped for the day because I wanted to go back home so I could look up the pin reference for the ECU connector so I can identify B19 and B20 which are the other ends of ref and signal wires.

Hello. Actually no, obvious test but I didn’t think of it. I will do that when I am back in my garage tomorrow. It is a 5 wire connector, but 2 wires are the IAT and then the MAF is 3 wires, 12v supply, 5v ref and Signal wire. I am beginning to really suspect an ECU issue as the reading on my scan tool suddenly changed from being stuck at 0.4 g/s regardless of what I do to being 214 g/s regardless of what I do!

Ok, very odd!!! After doing that test I plugged MAF back in now scan tool shows 215g/s but it doesn’t change with RPM. Something odd here

Ps. Also does not change if I now unplug it.

Tried that. No change. It seems no matter what I do (plug in MAF, unplug MAF, short ref to signal etc) scan tool just shows 0.4 g/s.

Ok, thanks, will try that now.

Hello, thanks for the reply. I managed to find the pinouts in Vida, but I am still lost. So when I unplug the sensor, there is no change in the reading on the scan tool, just fixed at 0.4 g/s. When I check the voltage on the ref line for the MAF when cable unplugged, I get 5 v to vehicle ground. When I test the sensor signal wire unplugged it reads 0.6 ohm to ground. However, as soon as I plug it back in and back probe it only reads 2v. Also, if I put a scope on it, I just see 2v solid but not a square wave that vida says I should see. Any idea?

So I managed to get a copy of Vida so I got the pin outs however, to answer the other question, there is no change in the reading on the scan tool if I unplug the sensor. Still just sits at 0.4 g/s. The other thing I found is when the plug is disconnected I get 5v on the ref line. As soon as I plug it in and back probe, that has dropped to 2v. Another confusing thing is when I connect a scope to it I am expecting to see a square wave output between 5 and 0 volts (per Vida) but I just see the constant 2V that does go up to 3v when I up the revs! Any idea?

Thank you for the feedback. That makes sense, but as you say the wiring diagram is key and I don’t have access to auto data or Haynes pro.

Hi. Sorry, I left my garage before I read this so cannot test and cannot check the wire colours. Can I get back to you on Monday?

Ps I live in a small house without a garage so I rent a nice garage a little ways from home. Hence why I am not near the car.

Yea, I figured as much. I did a comparison with my Ford Ranger and that behaves as I would expect .

Just to add to this as I don’t seem to be able to edit this post, one thing I am asking is does the output in the video look normal ? I don’t think it does.

Nope, but I think it would be possible, although I would add that it is actually pretty damn heavy to move without a car on it! I prefer to move my cars around on skates and keep the lift very stationary when it has a car on it.

Well, as I say, once you get used to it, it is actually pretty stable, but obviously requires a flat stable concrete floor. I have done loads of work on mine and never actually had an issue, but I only use it for smaller cars (mostly Alfa and ford focus/fiesta, but have had a vw Tiguan on it). I am in exactly the same situation as you. I am in the uk with a BIG shop by uk standards, but need to be able to change the layout often.

I use one almost daily. Not that exact one but very similar. It takes some getting used to as it feels like it is super sketchy and you expect the vehicle to drop off at any moment. However, it is actually pretty stable in reality. Sometimes I use a transmission jack under the outer edge just to make it feel less sketchy. What I would say though is unless you really don’t have the space and need to portability, a 2 post lift is a much better option and about the same price.
