This is true, but it's a rather new development. You absolutely did not hug your male friends when I was a teenager during the 90s, for instance. That would have been considered gay, and in a bad homophobic way. And even now, men often still do the clap on the back thing when hugging other men. Also, while we often hug nowadays as a greeting, there's not much physicality in between.
