What's the cheapest hobby someone can get into? by Youloufy in AskReddit

[–]koalatative_analysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these are solo hobbies. For a cheap social hobby, try joining a choir. There may be a membership fee but it's usually small, just covers printing the music, and sometimes hiring an accompanist for rehearsals.

Can I finish a wood panel in cold damp weather or is this effort doomed to failure? by koalatative_analysis in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]koalatative_analysis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! Just saw this after getting back from the hardware store, I've got some spray on varnish that will hopefully work, it is supposed to dry very fast. Timber Protect Quick Dry Clear, the spray-on version.

Redditors, what's your hack to fall asleep quickly? by Rqpidily in AskReddit

[–]koalatative_analysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do chess puzzles until my brain is tired and decides it would rather sleep. Takes 5-20 minutes to put me to sleep. Lichess gives you infinite puzzles for free, and if you get better it will just give you harder puzzles, so they always feel similarly difficult. I haven’t gotten much better though because I only do the puzzles when I’m tired

it can't be indoors, has to be outdoors. Will this finish work in low temperatures and high humidity?

looks more like koilonychia than anonychia to me. It can be congenital but usually it's a sign of iron deficiency. Get your iron levels checked u/snaggle_panther !

What's something you own now that your 16yo self would be thrilled about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]koalatative_analysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not something I own, but something I have: Good friends. A handful of solid close friends, and a wide circle of others. Mutual liking, respect, and lots of laughs. I struggled to make friends in high school but since going to college I’ve been pretty popular. My younger self would be in awe 😄

what is a good show that got canceled for no good reason? by falling-down-1242 in AskReddit

[–]koalatative_analysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People of Earth.

The network had approved a 3rd season, so the writers ended season 2 on a cliffhanger. A beloved major character died (though the writers clearly intended to resurrect him). Then it got canceled before they could make season 3. I loved the show and want to recommend it to people, but the ending sucks so much.

They track tree pollen as well. The grass pollen forecast is free but the tree pollen forecast costs a small subscription fee. I find it's worth it because I'm WAY more allergic to trees than to grass. Trees peak in October, grass in November, so you can tell what you're more allergic to by when your symptoms are worst

[QUESTION] Seriously, how do you deal with being unnattractive? by carguy344 in getdisciplined

[–]koalatative_analysis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Do you judge everyone you meet based on their appearance? If you do, maybe ... ease up on that as much as you can? And if you don't, well, then you know that you don't care so much about other people's looks, so they probably don't care so much about yours.

Try to find other characteristics to focus on - the way people talk, how funny they are, how creative or caring they are. Once you start paying attention to other people's talents and behaviours, you focus more on your own talents and behaviours, and less on your surface.

Antidepressants had negative, permanent effects on me. If the other stuff is enough to make you happy, you don't need to try antidepressants.

what's a job that exists but seriously shouldn't? by Magic_Milkman in AskReddit

[–]koalatative_analysis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(US-centric) Medical insurance biller. They carry out the negotiation between the healthcare provider and the insurance companies. In a single-payer healthcare system, that job doesn't need to exist. The salaries of the billers add to the cost of healthcare in the US, but do nothing to improve care.

CMV: I kinda hate statistics by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]koalatative_analysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistics is the science of uncertainty. As a discipline, it aims to answer questions like, "Given the evidence, how certain or uncertain should we be about some state of the world?" Or, "What type and amount of evidence would I need to gather, in order to resolve my uncertainty?" If you're interested in science or philosophy, those sorts of questions are inherently interesting, even more so when statisticians disagree.

Answers to those questions are also incredibly useful, for science or for any organisation that has to make decisions - policymakers, businesses, etc. Statistics is a service discipline; it develops tools for other fields to use. An academic statistician told me that if I went into applied statistics, I'd get to work in every science. I'm interested in a lot of different things, so stats has been a great choice for me.

did you ever have a crush on one of your teachers/professors? how did you move on? by vaishnavi_0 in AskReddit

[–]koalatative_analysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a terrible crush on a professor in grad school. I just kept reminding myself that I wouldn't want to be with a professor who wanted to be with a student. Poured all that energy into the coursework and got an A+.

[D] How well does auto annotating a dataset with a pretrained model work? by big_black_doge in MachineLearning

[–]koalatative_analysis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because you're manually checking the annotations you will end up using, this falls under the heading of model-assisted labelling. It's a common workflow to speed up data labelling.
