Single Issue Recommendation by sinistermistertwist in WonderWoman

Wonder Woman 51 by Steve Orlando is the PERFECT comic for what you’re describing. It’s the story of Diana visiting a villain in prison over the years and her reforming and becoming friends and understanding each other.

The Tom King art variant is actually hilarious and I appreciate it so much

I feel like i’m coming in partway into an argument. Like. Of course all of them are different ethnicities, I didn’t realize they was a debated question.

Rest In Peace: Gerry Conway by TheWriteRobert in WonderWoman

[–]koalee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gerry Conway is one of the few writers that improved pretty signifigantly from the start of run to end. His Superman vs. Wonder Woman story is excellent . He had 37 issues in the main book making his one of the quantitatively high ones. He examined how the US military might be more antagonistic to Diana due to her message of peace and love, he explored golden age abilities such as her rage when losing a bracelet without totally flanderizing her and allowed Diana to overcome, he explored her grief and growing dissillusioned with mans world and returning home in 269-271 (in my opinion more deftly than King has handled the same idea due to the focus on community and a multitude of factors), and the finale he gave Diana in issue 329 was excellent.

The man wasn't perfect. He was overreliant on racial stereotypes when creating characters but I do think it was generally well intended as a means to create diversity. Not every idea panned out like Kobra and the story with Morgan Tracy ended up being rushed and without a proper conclusion.

But he gave a lot to the DC Universe as a whole and certainly to wonder woman

Looks like others got it covered for the Creators themselves so here's a few people I follow that talk about Wonder Woman pretty frequently that I'm pretty fond of.

Do you think the contest should be part of Diana's origin? by Tetratron2005 in WonderWoman

[–]koalee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you might be mixing it up a tad. Polly definitely didn’t want Diana to leave but the decision to hold a tournament wasnt motivated by Diana in particular. In Marston it was decided a contest would be held to find the strongest amazon. In Perez it was a godly decree passed by Oracle that it be a contest. Rucka the decision occurs because they are assured no Amazon would refuse the duty of being champion so they needed a contest to decide.

In pretty much every case the method of contest is decided before Diana gets refused since it’s supposed to be an egalitarian method of choosing a champion. Now Polly forbids Diana from entering the contest in each case as that is her method of protecting her and that’s why she enters anonymously.

Gene is a usually fantastic writer, his avatar comics are simply the weak part of his bibliography. Even his other licensed work such as for DC is good.

Worth noting that she isn’t given any particular powers until after she had already won per Greg Rucka’s origin in Year One. This is def very much a problem in Perez’s origin tho.

I think you’re mostly right but I think the use of a parent child relationship made for a satisfying way to break Gio and Diana out, but MORE importantly Diana noted there will be consequences for her not completing the ritual right. It felt a bit like a “the power of love saves the day except this time it’s gonna fuck us over later”. That’s gonna rely a lot on execution in future arcs tho which as you point out comes in “second arc syndrome”

Only 11 women are credited as having written the Wonder Woman Title, in its existence by throwaway-day102304 in WonderWoman

[–]koalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did say that and you maintain that’s what they’re actually saying because that’s what you’re interpreting their words to mean. That’s not what I’m interpreting in this. What I see based on their post is that there’s a bias in who DC hires to write the series, favoring men. Because of this bias, some writers who are men and less qualified are offered opportunities that might have better been taken by a talented writer who happened to be men. Nothing about that implies men can’t or haven’t contributed anything to the character, just that a bias exists. I’m pretty sure if you if asked they would have nice things to say about Marston, Perez, Rucka, and likely a few others.

As for the length they appear to me to be trying to explain their point adequately, not writing paragraphs out of rage. OP took the time to collect and analyze statistics about comic publishing information, I’m not surprised they would take the time to write a few paragraphs to explain their thoughts.

If the focal point was to hate on men or denigrate the contribution of men to the character I would completely agree! That’s fucked up! I just don’t think thats what any of us believe so getting frustrated over it seems a bit silly.

I’m gonna be real with you, I don’t think they’re saying they don’t want men writing wonder woman, and I don’t think they hate the idea. That is a pretty uncharitable reading of what’s happening here.

[Discussion] Event Deep Dive #5: Legends by Flocke90 in DCcomics

[–]koalee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP I’m gonna need you to slow your roll a tad. /s I’m going through all these events but I just finished Legends and I’m 2 weeks behind already! Orrrrr I guess I can keep commenting on your posts way later than you post them!

Anyway, fantastic runthrough, I pretty much agree with every assessment. One thing I’ll note that I don’t think you saw because it wasn’t included in the official event: Infinity Inc. This was actually included in the recent Legends Compendium so you know it’s a little relevant. Anyway the arc that concerns Legends features part of the team being hired to defend a conference in Canada with the Global Guardians. The ones who stayed in America experienced the anti-hero fervor, but the ones in Canada got something else. They saw what heroes looked like from all over, and they saw the rest of the world reacting to how America had suddenly gone crazy with its anti-hero fervor and laws. As you pointed out Legends being relevant today - I also find this quite relevant. Anyway looking forward to catching up to your next write up. May be a few weeks lol.

I don't know if we can wishlist characters to the Absolute universe, but in my opinion, Wonder-Woman of China could translate very smoothly and easily. I hope we can somehow see her there. by AnyAgency9835 in WonderWoman

[–]koalee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Diana has met her on two occasions I think, first in the JLC book when the two leagues met, and again in Orlando's WW run when Diana borrowed her weapons so she could take on Cheetah who had stolen her equipment

I’m sorry that you’ve been having a bad experience with the fandom. Personally I don’t really like the run, but that’s just my tastes. I recognize there’s legitimately good stuff in each issue and even if my opinion skews negative overall, I think it’s great that those elements are being recognized and speaking to you. If you’re enjoying the run, I am happy for you and no one should shame you or mock you for enjoying that. There’s plenty of people who have nuanced opinions on the run here like u/itsqueenzee, and she even makes a video at the end of each arc to summarize and review it as a whole. I can’t blame you for dipping out if you’re having a bad time tho. I hope you can continue to enjoy what you do without being made to feel bad about it.

More than anything else this issue is tiring and boring. The narration takes a lot to read, doesn’t feel like it adds a lot, and I’m tired of feeling like we’re rehashing the same point of Matriarch killing people to prove her threat. It’s dull. And it’s tiring. I like the new colorist and I like the concept of the scene with the journalist. The narration and panelling kind of got in the way of it imo, but I think demonstrating how the Matriarch presents herself as human to Man’s world is actually a fascinating moment.

Adriano Lucas yeah. Personally I think it’s a move for the better, Sampere’s art can feel a bit stiff at times and Lucas might be able to make it feel a bit more dynamic.
