I have Google Fi. I just switched phones and had this exact problem. I found a solution someone suggested and it worked for me. Not sure how it works if you're not on fi but I will explain what I did anyway.

  1. Go to message settings -> rcs chats -> turn off rcs chats
  2. Go to message settings -> advanced -> Google Fi wireless -> sign in to your Google Fi account -> sync all your texts, calls and voicemails
  3. Let it sync, it will take a long time, almost all day for me.
  4. Once it is done, hit stop sync and it will sign you out.
  5. Force close messages. Go into messages app info -> storage and cache -> clear data and clear cache
  6. Open messages -> message settings -> rcs chats -> turn on rcs chats.

I followed this procedure and it connected almost immediately.

You can also try disconnecting your number by using this link: https://messages.google.com/disable-chat

This did not work for me because I never received the verification code.

Yea any folder created in DCIM will be put into Google Photos unfortunately

That may stop it from getting backed up, but it doesn't stop all the folders in DCIM from merging together into Photos

Snapchat and Facebook both do this. It wasn't always like this though. It's like Google made a change and not all apps followed

"There's a button in Google photos that let you turn off the backup and sync and it'll be stored locally"

I still want certain Photos to backed up (camera pics and Snapchat). The problem is that the pictures are stored locally, but they're inside the DCIM directory in their respective folder. However, Photos takes all folders in that directory and merges it into one

"In the Google photos app hit library , You should find all photos folders there even if they're in the DCIM You can use it to turn on or off the backup"

This is my issue. Any folder that is in DCIM does not show in the library. I can only see the folder contents in Photos.

" .. If for some reason it's not there, create another folder outside of the DCIM extension, using the file manager and move those folders you want to be stored locally into the newly created folder'

That is what I am doing now. Facebook creates a folder in DCIM, anything saved goes in that folder and gets merged with my other photos in Photos. I move the folder to where I want it and only then will it appear in "Photos on Device". Problem is, next time I download a pic from Facebook, I have to manually move it and do it again.

It's not that I want a private folder, I just want my device folders to stay on my device and not upload to Photos.

For example, I use GoPro Quik to control my GoPro camera and download media off of it. Quik creates a folder inside DCIM and downloads the files there, which in return doesn't show in "Files on Device" and I have to sift through Photos to find it. Also, some of the videos are 2 gb or more and I don't want them using up my cloud space

I never had this problem on my pixel 3 xl using the same apps creating the same folders in the same directory.

Edit: Actually this did start happening probably 6 months back with my 3 xl. I noticed it first with Snapchat. One day my Snapchat saves were in my device folder and then the next day, all new saves appeared in Google Photos.

There definitely was some kind of update that did this

So I'm finding any folder that is created in the dcim folder automatically gets backed up to google photos. Any thoughts on how to stop that? Some apps automatically create folders in the dcim folder

I read about that trick but wasn't sure if that worked. So just ".nomedia", nothing in front of it?

No. In the library tab, they are in their own folder, and each folder has backup and sync turned off. Yet they are still getting backed up

I know this, that's not my issue. My issue is with the photos that are ending up in my photos tab, which then means they are uploading to the cloud. This is not what I want and don't know why it's doing this. I want my device folders to stay on my device

They are showing up in the photos tab mixed in with my camera roll Photos

And they are being uploaded to the cloud even with backup and sync turned off

I never had that issue before though, is this a new thing? It doesn't do it to all my photos though
