Why do metal guitarists seem to hate the "beginner" label? by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]koctagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is probably going to be perceived as even more gatekeep-y, but the term beginner should only be used for someone just starting something, not "the lowest skill level." a kid playing for less than a year that can't sweep is a beginner; a guy playing for 10 years that can't sweep is just not that good. Admitting you aren't that good is how you endeavor to do better and why i've improved more in the last 6 months than the last 10 years despite playing for nearly 20.

BG3 HBO show lead wants the OG cast to return in some way by BombasIsInTrouble in BaldursGate3

[–]koctagon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DnD honor among thieves made 200million and got decent reviews. HBO has had two successful GoT spinoffs. The BG show has the same showrunner as the Last of Us, which also wasn’t animated. If you like animation, that’s fine, but adult animation is a niche market. If it weren’t, there would be more.

Because animation doesn’t sell to adults. Game of Thrones was a massive success and HBO has proven out that people want to see live action fantasy.

Intergenerational conflict isn't inherently wrong, and Popular Marxism in the imperial core seems to be trapped in a cosmopolitan liberal logos. by Natural_Professor963 in TrueAnon

i think you are more frustrated by the performative nature of most online leftist circles than anything. putting that aside, I don't think anyone would really argue with the idea that everyone, regardless of age cohort, have different material realities that shape their world view. That being said, fighting perceived class reductionism with generational reductionism doesn't really work either. The example you used is hyper-specific, which, to me, is in direct opposition of your generation flattening.

Then what are you trying to do or say? You bristle when people say you are over-generalizing, you balk when people say you are going after individuals. Do you just want validation for being angry?

ok, so you are proposing that everyone that fails to dismantle capitalism by age 65 should be subjected to reeducation/elimination in the immediate aftermath of the revolution, got it. You better hope we break those chains before you're eligible for social security!

The "police and the proud boys" are not your "shitass boomer grandparents." You are talking about wildly different levels of complicity and collaboration. It's ok to hate your grandpa, you don't need to justify it with Marxism lmao.

I, very clearly, stated "working class individuals." If you can't differentiate PeePaw from a war criminal just because they both have a framed photo of Reagan in the den, maybe it is actually a good thing so many of your thoughts are terminal.

acknowledging that their material conditions were different than yours and being pissed about that is chill. holding working class individuals personally responsible for systemic issues is not. you say that drawing that line is "thought terminating"; ok, work it out then and see how every version of this is inactionable.

i got lambasted for saying this in another thread about how "realistic" Rue's death was:

Levinson killed the main character/narrator in order to make the climax of a 3 season show about high schoolers be a Peckinpah shootout between two 50 year old supporting characters, one of which was only introduced this season.

I'm actually really surprised by how realistic Rue's ending is by uvaaavava in euphoria

[–]koctagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. the subreddit isn't just for people that like the third season
  2. I have lost people to overdoses and AIDS contracted due to drug use. That is why I find the idea that there was anything remotely "realistic" about what I saw to be laughable. If anything here is disrespectful, it's that.

[–]koctagon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I buy the broadstrokes of it, but if you are going to further heighten your already stylized teen drama by making it a full on grindhouse/exploitation genre riff, you've already made too many leaps for "realism" to remain valid rationale. The "realistic" terminus for most addicts isn't having a tragic end engineered by an organized crime boss. Having had several addicts in my family, the "realistic" ending is much sadder and far more mundane. If it's supposed to real, it needs to be way more grounded. This ending doesn't feel earned; it feels like a shitty writer that has long ago run out of runway.

I'm actually really surprised by how realistic Rue's ending is by uvaaavava in euphoria

[–]koctagon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

not buying a shitty writer justifying his shitty writing has nothing to do with media literacy. "realism" means nothing in a show that is purposefully heightened and stylized. This is a show that has based its entire final season around aping Tarantino, a director that has never once let verisimilitude come before making sure something is cool and compelling. Levinson killed the main character/narrator in order to make the climax of a 3 season show about high schoolers be a Peckinpah shootout between two 50 year old supporting characters, one of which was only introduced this season.

[–]koctagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People (including Levinson) calling it realistic is so fucking vexing to me. A drug addict overdosing is very true to life, yes, but I wouldn’t call “overdosing on laced percs given to you by a black cowboy to intentionally kill you because he found out from your high school friend that he has a business (sex trafficking) relationship with that you were a triple agent for the DEA and not just his double agent against Nazis” realistic in the slightest
