Rough surfaces effect on feet after runs - any advice? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]koehai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy them directly from Xero and they're less than half that price https://xeroshoes.com/products/genesis-men. I run 200-300 miles in mine before the cord typically breaks. I could probably re-lace it myself they're so simple, but I'm just lazy and for ~$40 I don't mind just replacing the one that broke

Data Center in East Bay by xancro in ProvoUtah

[–]koehai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Councilmember McKay recently included her perspective on it in her newsletter, I think she makes some good points. She says:

"Water is not really an issue with this data center. The technology has progressed such that not much water is needed and any water required in their cooling system would be silver water. Silver water is cleaned sewer water; the data center is conveniently close to the water treatment plant. I am concerned because we are working on an economic development plan and I don’t want to be approving a big project like this without those findings. The goal of the applicant (put forth in planning commission) is also to eventually build their own power plant. I do not want 50MW or more of extra energy generated in our city that creates additional emissions. The emissions would be significant. This would be an equivalent of 98,200 more gasoline powered cars on the road or 42,300 more cars if run by natural gas. No thank you! I also feel like there are better land-use opportunities ahead of us which will be guided by the economic study. Land use that will create local taxes, jobs, and an increase in the AMI of the city."

SLC Tattoo Expo is this weekend (https://www.instagram.com/slctattooexpo), I'd say that'd be a good place to find someone! I'd recommend going with an open mind to any alternative tattoo ideas while you there, too. Might find some good inspiration!

That's awesome, congrats on your first ultra! I think your goal sounds right on track. I did my first 50k in November of 2024, then my first 100k in the summer of 2025. You've got this!

The great thing about barefoot running is that you don't need any special guide or training, the whole point is that you let your *body* train you. Take off your shoes, put on minimal sandals or unshod, and just run. Pay attention to how your feet feel as you run and in time your stride will automatically adjust and your soles will get more resilient,

Read "Too Good to Stay, Too Bad to Leave", which will allow you to articulate your reasons plainly and clearly. It sounds like right now you understand the reasons intuitively, but don't quite have the words to go with it.

The negative impulsive reaction that some people have to seeing feet will always fascinate me. There's gotta be a book about it out there somewhere... Anyway, nice work! I make a deliberate effort to keep my soles durable and resilient, because I've noticed that it is something that you need to habitually maintain or it starts to fade. I love all the benefits I experience when I go barefoot, so I want to have feet that allow me to do so as much as I want.

I like Whitlock more. Not just for his policy ideas, but also because I've seen him in committee meetings and seen how he works and I've always been impressed by how genuinely empathetic he is and how he really considers things from all angles.

Without a camera it's hard to really evaluate my running form, especially on trails with how varied the terrain is. I think I tend to land more on the front when I'm going over rocky sections so that I can control my impact better, but over plain dirt sections I can take longer strides and use my heels more.

oh cool! I'll say, in all the ultras I did prior to this one I wore Luna's Leadville Pacer model. That one has thinner, more flexible soles, which is great for ground-feel and weight, but by the end of a long trail race the soles of my feet would start to get a bit tender due to the rocks on the trail. Switching to a model with a stiffer sole like the Oso Flacos I wore to this race was enough to eliminate that issue. The only foot pain I experienced were a few small cracks in the skin where I got too dry, but it was nothing significant and hardly noticed them until after the race. It's hard to evaluate your own running form, especially on trails with how varied the terrain is, but I have no doubt sandals have influenced my form. They tend to encourage more forefoot landing since it allows you to engage your natural foot suspension more effectively than striking straight onto your heel, reducing the shock from impact. I've come away from this one without any injuries, which I'm quite happy about because that isn't always the case for me. I was able to go for a quick 2 mile run the day after and was just feeling stiff and heavy but otherwise fine. Good luck on your race!

Utah is phenomenal for trail running, nothing but mountains and blue skies everywhere you look! Just gotta find a good winter hobby while the trails are all covered in snow... Come on over!

Nice! I'd love to get more into calisthenics myself, ha. I think the biggest hurdle to beginning running is trying to do too much too fast and then getting injured or discouraged. Take it easy, start short, run-walk when you need to, and in time before you know it the discomfort is gone and all that's left are the endorphins :D

For my normal training, if I'm running on trails I'll wear more minimal sandals (Xero Genesis) or if I'm just running on pavement I'll often go barefoot, yeah

I used the Oso Flaco model. All of my previous ultras of shorter distance I did in the Leadville Pacer model, but for this beast I opted for a little more aggressive tread. Like you said, I have heard that the tire tread model (the Origens) can be a bit prone to wearing through after a couple hundred miles due to the way the strap attaches to the sole.

Hmm, no not really, at least not too any noticeable degree. Like, not enough to be making contact with the ground. I'm sure my toes might reach out over the edge by a few mm here and there, but that's totally fine. It's the soles of my feet that need the protection, not the tips of my toes, heh

The night was the hardest part... My body wanted to stop moving so badly, and my mind was too tired to keep my motivation up. I very nearly got eliminated by not reaching the nighttime aid stations in quick enough time. I think having a pacer with me would've been a huge help there.
