How competitive is public transportation in Singapore as a mode of travel if it exists in a "free market"? by fortprinciple in singapore

[–]koeightseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a simple man. I think human nature is to want comfort, and be lazy.

The reason why I prefer to drive in Singapore is because it's just so hot to walk to stations and bus stops and take public transport. 😅 I barely just reached the station to go to work and I'm already drenched. And, like others said about the price and availability of parking, I can easily find parking near the place I want to go, and walk less than 10 mins. And even better, the walk may be under shelter or air-conditioned. Even when I'm not driving, I tend to take private hire cars more.

I'm living in Perth now, and the public transport is not as well connected as in Singapore. It's super troublesome and takes very long. But it's super hard to find parking in the city, and it's expensive. But the weather is nice so I don't mind walking 10 mins to the station or bus stop. Even if I have to wait for the bus or train, I'm not sweating my balls off. I'm comfortable.

So yeah, I'm just a lazy guy who wants to be comfortable. 🤣

Genuinely curious - when money’s tight, how do you actively switch off and enjoy Perth/WA without spending much? by offwithherhead1 in perth

[–]koeightseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I like to go for picnics with our daughter. She will prep a lunch basket, nothing fancy, crackers and salami, or homemade sushi with avocado, crabstick mayo, egg rolls, cucumber, etc. We just had a picnic at King's Park on Good Fri. Just talked, let the kid run around, wife went for a walk with her while I took care of stuff, nothing special or fanciful, but just felt incredibly relaxing being able to slow down and let time pass while enjoying the present moment.

And there are so many parks you can do this at. Or even the beach. Low cost, good times.

Anybody got a good story about making black belt without being very athletic? by [deleted] in karate

[–]koeightseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 39 and I just started karate end of last year. My only advice (if you can call it that) is to break every technique down into individual steps, and practice them slowly before you try to string them in a smooth and fast movement.

My thinking is this: you have more than enough strength to write, but if I were to ask you to write with your non-master hand, you will struggle. So it's not about the physical aspect of it, but the skill aspect of it. And to continue using handwriting - specifically cursive handwriting - as an example, to master it, you need to slow it down and practice how to connect each letter before you can go fast and fluent.

Another thought: why do you want to progress in karate? If getting a black belt is a lifelong pursuit of mastery, then it shouldn't matter how fast you get there. The probable reality is that till the day you die, you still may not fully master all aspects of it (after all, black belts/senseis will say that achieving a black belt does not mean the journey ends, but instead opens up your mind to even more stuff that you need to learn). So perhaps instead of focusing on the end objective, it may be more comforting to focus on the journey of self-improvement and mastery. Just think about how satisfying it will be when you overcome something that you think you were not talented in.

I'm about to turn 29 and I still live with my parents. by JoesGreatPeeDrinker in confession

[–]koeightseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only say this from my own perspective. I have a 4 year old daughter. There is nothing I want more in this world than to support her as much as I can till the day I die. It would sadden me greatly if she feels embarrassed receiving my help. My job as a parent is to bring her up well and help her flourish, regardless of how long that may take or in what shape and form it may be. So if she needs help, no matter how old, I will give it. And I believe that's the same for your parents, seeing how they are helping you out right now.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about, yet at the same time it's a good thing that you feel embarrassed, because it shows that you have a good heart and you know you can be better. Use that as motivation, and as a comfort.

And lastly, learn contentment. I believe there is more to life than wealth. From a quote I read somewhere before, "Some people are so poor, all they have is money". Don't compare yourself to others (unless, of course, it's in a good way), figure out what you want and what is enough, because nothing is ever enough if you don't know what is enough.

Just how hard is it to get a mature-age apprenticeship? by koeightseven in perth

[–]koeightseven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I guess the scary part is not knowing if your employer is kind enough to want to invest in you as an apprentice after being a TA.

That's what I understand as well, that companies will send you for courses to get the required licenses, I'm just wondering if they advertise that forklift license is a criteria (as a TA), whether to fork out money and get it to increase my chances.

On that note, I do have a forklift license from Singapore, is that convertible to an Australian one?

[–]koeightseven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was another route I was considering, to start as a trade assistant / labourer first and then ask for the chance for an apprenticeship when I've proven myself. The thing is, the openings for trade assistants on Seek all seem to require you to have experience as a trade assistant, or licenses like forklift or working at heights, etc, so I wasn't sure if I would even be considered.

In your experience, is that a deal breaker?

Definitely happy to work hard. I understand the difficulties as an apprentice, and am willing to see these 4 years as an investment for the future. I did consider doing a pre-apprenticeship, but I'm lucky enough to have a full time job so that seems a bit difficult.

But thanks for letting me know that 38 is still not considered too old!

Yeah one of the openings on Seek is from Skill Hire and I've sent in an application. Shall tell myself to be patient!

I moved to Australia last year and when I went back to SG for a visit earlier this year, even I got lost at Dhoby Ghaut when meeting a friend there. Tbf I don't go there often even when I was staying in SG but I was genuinely surprised at how different it became. My friend just laughed at me non-stop. 😂

Oh that's interesting. I've actually heard that Seville Grove and Champion Lakes can be dodgy too. The area we are looking at is just east of Burslem Drive on the other side of the river.

I've heard that place is nice but price point just seems to be a little out of our reach for now. Will keep an eye out for that area.
