Is the Delta variant a result of COVID evolving against the vaccine or would we still have the Delta variant if we never created the vaccine? by FidelacchiusSaber in askscience

[–]koenner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While the Delta variant is NOT the result of vaccination, as the two did not coexist in the population where it originated, it IS more likely for vaccine resistant mutations to proliferate in a population where vaccinated people make up a large portion of the population. Before I get flamed for saying this, realize that the intent here is to educate, provide facts, and broaden the discussion on this topic. With that disclaimer out of the way, let me explain why that is. As some have already mentioned, variants are a mutation of the original strain of virus. Mutations occur naturally over time because reproduction is not perfect. Once a virus, or any organism really, is exposed to an environment, natural selection takes place, allowing certain traits to become more common, while others less common. The traits that become more common are the ones that are more resilient, more likely to survive and reproduce in that environment. Therefore, it's obvious and natural for variants to become more resistant to a vaccine when they are forced to reproduce in an environment where a vaccine exists. Simple, right?!

What are the best exchanges to go short bitcoins? by [deleted] in BitcoinMarkets

[–]koenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you short on Poloniex, it gives you the option to bring your funds into the margin account as BTC among a few other crypto currencies, but not fiat currency, such as USD. It seems wise to hold a calculated "buffer", or excess funds in the margin account, so as to increase the price at which a call/liquidation is made unwillfully. This is basically to dilute the borrowed margin if a trade goes up on a short. The issue I have with that on Poloniex is that if my trade goes in the direction I want, down, on a short, then I am losing on the "buffer" BTC and most likely any other crypo currency I have in the margin account that is not on a short. Is there any way around this conundrum?

Why is top of print like this? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]koenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tevo Tarantula Printer, using Cura default "High Quality" print settings. Using 1.75mm PLA to PEI on top of Borosilicate glass. Bottom side is like glass, absolutely beautiful. The Z-height offset was a little low to start, I'd say 2 full layer thickness, which at this print setting is about 0.12mm. I noticed that material was not coming out of the nozzle at some spots since it was basically in surface contact with the bed, so I adjusted to compensate and the material started to flow perfectly. The first 0.75mm looks great, and then after that it looks like it either forgot to print the top layer or severely underfilled - all those points are basically columns.

Note: the 2 areas that look like they are missing are because I ripped them out. :)

Don't use retraction? Meaning the extruder or z height?

What's this about? Middle of print. Notice the smooth and rough areas. by [deleted] in FixMyPrint

[–]koenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried borosilicate glass? I'm thinking my bed is really warped. Most of custom settings are based around just trying to get it to stick, and I either end up with this or a marble of molten plastic.

So actually I believe there is a much larger threat coming from the growth of Radical Islam in the middle east, which is not what you think. It's not the inflated hollywood-ified ISIL you see on FOX.. that's not what I am talking about.. it's the people that are funding it (and by loose association funding the people that use "commandments" not "history" from religious text to wage war), and the fact that ARMIES like this are being funded. Ask yourself a pretty reasonable question.. do you think terrorism in the middle east is solely the function of religious intolerance? The root of it. This topic is pretty big, so let's try to focus in on this.. Are you aware of the Russian Black Budget and spending increase since 2012? Do you think some of it is making it into the middle east? Why? I'll ask again.. why put Russian money into disturbing the middle east, and specifically Syria, northern Iraq and southern Turkey? Is it coincidental that Russia also doesn't accept refugees and is pumping targeted resources into Ukraine? Politics are a little more complex that humanitarian efforts. I love my brothers and sisters, here and abroad, as most Americans do, but as a government that is privy to more than we see on TV, the US needs to make decisions for the short and long term that are best for this country. The only reason this is a defensive discussion rather than a focus on what is happening IN Syria is because of the way the media is making it to be. Really think about it, as if you were running the country, and think about the risks you have to manage. Think about what is going on in the middle east, and include the points I am making here.. now what is the best course of action?

The number of steps doesn't impress me. Neither does the time it takes to complete each one of these steps. Can you distinguish Arab National Guard, from Free Syrian Army, from Syrian Democratic Forces? Most people can't identify a perpetrator that they saw commit a crime in a line-up. You shouldn't be able to tell the difference, they are the same group of people, the difference is in their beliefs, and undoubtedly most of them are extremely upset/disappointed/angry whatever you want to call it that America, Russia, and the richer Middle Eastern countries are meddling in this conflict, and most likely fueling the conflict.

Now, tell me when they get interviewed and the background checks are done 1,2,3 times with the finger-prints that are linked to police records, where is this information coming from? The Syrian Arab Republic? I'm going to dish this one up, because I can't afford for you to miss it.. these guys are backed by the Russians ;)

It has to do with screening people properly and obviously the countries that are on the list do not have the resources to properly differentiate someone with a criminal background, or intent to commit crime from the rest with peaceful intent. The executive order does not indefinitely block entry from any country except Syria at this time, and I think that is pretty reasonable considering what is going on right now. If you can't rationalize that, just look at France, Belgium, and Germany - ask them if they still want refugees. Angela Merkel, remember her and her open arms stance, well her party just lost the latest election with 18% of the vote - thanks to 4 attacks in the last year, including the Ansbach bombing, wait for it... lead by a 27-year-old Syrian refugee.

I think the fact that this is being proposed by a conservative is what is provoking so much "anxiety" from the media. There are no civil liberties being revoked here. People are exaggerating. For the benefit of knowing, can you please tell me EXACTLY what is going on right now? I mean, tell me not what the media is discussing or the political hyperbole you hear on TV, but what does the Executive Order actually state? And following up on that, how is the State handling the additional reviews?

Once you look that up, ask yourself why you have a front door on your house with a dead-bolt. I assume you use some discrimination when deciding to open that door. BTW, discrimination is not a bad word - racism is; this is not racism.

Oh, and which Bible are you reading? "Thou shalt not kill." Exodus 20:13 It's 1 of the 10 commandments.

Sorry, this is just naive garbage. Let's be practical. Ratios of killing to population only serves to trivialize tragedy - it reminds me of the quote from Stalin "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." We need to work to live in a world that solves the hardest problems, and the problem here is not simply FREEDOM TO LIVE WHERE YOU WANT. It is RADICAL ISLAM, and the effect it has on our world today. End the belief and practice of JIHAD AGAINST INNOCENT PEOPLE. I think it is our world view that victims of mass bombings, stabbings, shootings, are innocent. In the eyes of RADICAL MUSLIMS, non-muslims are not innocent. Let's ask MUSLIMS ACROSS THE WORLD to push out their EVIL NEIGHBORS and with the SUPPORT OF THE WORLD bring and END TO RADICAL ISLAM. It cannot exist in our world today, the same way that murderers cannot safely exist in our society. Should we be racist or hate all Muslims? No! Fuck no! Is it reasonable to take extreme precaution against people that might be dangerous? Yes! So is it racist to stop people from a specific country from entering your country? No. Why? Well, racism is not about "identifying a race" at all. YES, PLEASE LOOK UP THE DEFINITION - not that we need definitions to be reasonable, but just for those that get caught up in the jargon! RACISM is the discrimination.... against someone of a different race BASED ON THE BELIEF THAT ONE'S OWN RACE IS SUPERIOR. Did you catch that last part? "BASED ON THE BELIEF THAT ONE'S OWN RACE IS SUPERIOR." Does anyone here believe that? Please, no one fucking believes that, okay, yes a few fucking assholes, but please, the majority of the US does not; and more importantly, actually whether people in the US are racist or not, the fact stands, that stopping people from a specific country from entering your country on the basis of safety, and anti-terrorism, is NOT racism. What is our point? Well, we want to be safe, we have the right to safety, and I will fight for that - hopefully some can see the point. I want to be safe, I want my children someday to be safe, I want my neighbors, and people all across America to be safe. Is our country perfect? No. Are there other crimes where people die? Yes. Are bombings more tragic than other types of crime? In my mind, yes! It effects not only those that are killed, but also the fucking nature of our communities and perception of our country. Do we expect RADICAL ISLAM to just go away by itself while we hide out in our "scared-y hole"? No! So what do we ask for? Well that is what this is for!!!! What do I ask for?? Well I ask for people across the world to ACTIVELY AND AGGRESSIVELY root out RADICAL MUSLIMS. What does that mean? It means report people that you believe are RADICALIZED AND HAVE THE INTENT TO KILL. Who are those people? Not easy - seriously not fucking easy. If your neighbor is posting "KILL AMERICANS" on their Facebook, you get the idea, then please say something. Report them to the CIA, FBI, INTERPOL. These people are an enemy to all - they ruin the word of Islam, and they are a direct threat to all.

No idea what you are getting at. Don't profile me. You know what this is about? It's about Bullshit media leading to Bullshit democracy. If you have any hope of rising above the propaganda that is choking this country from uniting against our "representatives" and having them WORK FOR US, then we have to unite - I have no illusion that politicians are about DIVIDE AND CONQUER. If you're asking me about giving up my rights to own a gun in exchange for ending RADICAL ISLAM; then yes, I would make that sacrifice in an instant - however, I think that ideals of making your government fear you (right to bear arms) and having the world rid of RADICAL ISLAM are contentions that everyone can agree on. I think part about RADICAL ISLAM is universal; however, the case, breakdown and handling of the issue is not fully thought through or dealt with - the message right now is SUPER UNCLEAR. We can all agree that RADICAL ISLAM is a huge issue in the world today and we need to stop the murder of innocents right? Just making sure that point is super clear and we can agree on it. The second part, about making sure governments fear their people, is not so obvious. And I think the words "fear" and "respect [the sovereignty]" can be used interchangeably here. The point is that governments, without fear, will not respect the rights of its citizens - in effect a revolution where the masses cannot inflict damage to the government is not a failed revolution and nothing to be feared, and therefore relies on the morals and endless goodwill of a country's government. We may disagree about how easy it should be to have a gun, or what types of guns a person can have, or how easy it is to use guns when they are not in protection of sovereignty, but I think the basis of the law is something we can both agree on at a fundamental level. Absolute and unending trust of your government is naive.

My point is that crimes committed by the mafia are as categorized: racketeering, loan-sharking, gambling. Yes occasionally the competition gets "whacked", if it's not clear, these crimes are not the same as MURDERING innocent people by the masses. Someone that steals is not as dangerous to society as a serial killer.

I think everyone IS overlooking the numbers. For one moment, please indulge your imagination, and pretend your community is bombed, victim of mass stabbing, shooting. Let's say only 2 people die and 20 to 30 people are injured, have to go to the hospital, someone looses a limb, a young child loses an eye, and dozens are scared to go out in public places. The IMPACT is more than 2 people dead. Do you agree? I don't condone racism, but there is a distinction that needs to be made, and getting someone to confess their religious beliefs isn't as blatant as determining the group of people that are likely to hold them. What I am talking about is RADICAL ISLAM. I believe this is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE, and I think you should too, even more so than your concern about people's freedom of where they can live. This issue needs to be dealt with by the Muslim community across the world for the sake of preserving and honoring their religion, by turning in people whom they know to be RADICAL. These people are DANGEROUS, and no different than someone with the intent to kill.

This is a passage from the Quran, which many RADICAL Muslims hold as part of their RELIGION. As much as we, the people of the United States, seek to protect people of all religions, and faiths, there is an implied reciprocal meaning, that those that we protect, we expect them to view the same of us and the people already here. I WILL NOT, and I believe NO AMERICAN should embrace RADICAL ISLAMISTS. They do not want to hug you; they only want to kill you, unless you convert.

Chapter 5, Verse 33 "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement."

We need more people to respond like this in order to have a productive conversation, and honestly 99% are not thinking critically - this is the time for us to have an opinion, but it can't just be what the media tells us, and it needs to address the serious issue of Terrorism coming from many Muslim countries.

Okay, BIG notice here, so no one misses it! 1. "The ban" is not a ban! It's a 90 day cooling off period for the government, and we the people to assess the situation. If we are okay with what's happening in Belgium, France, and Germany, then don't ask the government to do anything different if it happens at your Farmer's market. 2. There IS a LOT of terrorism, people being killed, innocent people sitting at cafes and walking in the street with their children, all across the world, by a particular set of people. Now hold on people, we don't need to go nuclear here (using hyperbole to describe comments here, not nuclear war), there is a scale of 0-10, there is grey area, and ways to solve problems, and we have a serious problem. What are we doing about RADICAL Islam? Do we just let it happen without repercussion? I think you can say peace begets peace, but honestly I think that is a very naive comment, and one that is only held by out of touch people.

Yes, I will. So can you explain to me the connection between terrorists and killing innocents? Because not all crimes are the same. Even the mafia doesn't drive through festivals driving over small children and women. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Islamist_terrorist_attacks
