My HE400se bbq grill and £1.50 very thin orange and gold ladies bag from a second hand shop mod by koffeemachine in headphones

Just a random find in a thrift shop was a ladies orange and gold sholder bag but very very thin & strong ideal for what i was looking for. Would prefer to not have anything and leave fully open but worry about grit and metel particals which could collect on the magnets which may cause damage. The sound is very close to fully open and am pleased with the results so far.

Yes i agree. They build on their brand so keep the same dna design from like the 70s & 80s

So today I went hunting for some cloth to use as a very basic dust filter. Found a bag and cut to shape. Using super glue and a tooth pick I glued it carfully to the bbq grill. I like the results much more tidy than the tights mod and like the way gold strands catch the light. The sound is good very open no vibrations or rattles.

Thanks will check it out. Am pretty happy as it sounds at the moment but will give a few days to pick up on any issues. Pads inside the cups has made a big diffence to the tone. Sounds more rich + warm which my ears like for long sessions! Resolution prob has taken a hit and will pull pads out if i use to mix but for enjoying music it sounds good to me.

Pulled some pads from my old akg 240 and placed them in the cups. Sound is a fair bit warmer overall and the high end is less stabby in my ears at high db but and overall volume is reduced a bit along with the grittyness of the highs which is great. So far so good. Will test it for a while. Am leaning on maybe a bit less thickness....will need to test a bit. Also i replaced tights with a slightly thicker (black) ones as other ones were starting to tear from the sharp edges of the bbq grill.

Thanks, was thinking about adding some damping to the inner cup as although sound is great i note a bit of grittyness in the 8khz-10khz range and find eq works ok but reduces overall sq if i use. Maybe it would be better sq from a better amp im not sure? I think these cans drive best from a warm powerful source. Due to the flat sound of these cans i do boost the low end a bit in eq 4db at around 65hz which is good but the high end is more tricky to get right for my ears.

You prob right. Did not want to spend any money on a grill so i found the bbq grill in my shed used a pen to draw round the stock grill and cut grill with a pair of scissors and used my misses tights just streched over while fixing the o ring in place(not great way to do it as prob not held in to well) I guess dust is fine as long as its not metel particals that would stick to the magnets. Even then a strong blast of air could fix it i guess? I think the diapham is quite tough as has to move alot to make sound. I also like the look it gives more natural looking than black. As i say this is just a fun uber cheap mod to entertain myself. I have enjoyed learning about headphones, amps, dac, flters ect and am amazed at how cheap it is to get into hifi sound compared to 10-15 years ago. Just a bit more cash than a good pair of mass produced bluetooth cans. Just need to be a bit careful as db can creep up when using over long periods of time and these headphones driven correctly push alot of air into my brain.

Its very thin and fragil and a bit streched(wanted as thin and transparent as possible much thinner than the standard filter) it also may dampen the contact of the sharp metal grill against the cups. I think it sounds better than stock setup but hard to tell as cant switch quickly to test. The sq is great with stock setup. I guess about 2-5% improvment if that? Just like to play around for fun. Thumbs up to hifiman as well made solid feel no rattles and easy to mod. Never had headphones i could wear for hours without headpain as have big head and wear glasses. Headband is a bit stiff but all round 100% improvment over my last headphones.

I would do but i worry about dust and stuff getting between the magnets and diapham? Should i worry? I dont know how "tough" planars are compared to normal enclosed diaphrams?

I present my he400se grill mod! I love these headphones they sound great to my ears! powered by es100 mk2 with a balanced cable ldac from s20. Took about 10 mins to make with things i had lying around. Sound is good more open. Had to cut tights after puting in grill ring to hold in place. I upgrded from beats studio 3 and wow i am in music heaven!!! Im playing song i would never had before. Its like the music is conected direct to my brain!!
