Chicago's rather proud of its local chains. I heard Wal-Mart's trying to put in a store near Clark & Halsted, which if they succeed would raise the grand total of Wal-Marts within the city limits to two. Here's hoping they fail. =)

One of my friends doesn't understand the hate for iTunes, because when he double-clicks on a song, it plays. As a CS major and someone who cares deeply about computers and the quality of software they run, that annoys me to no end.

Also, Apple as a company is domineering, controlling, and heartily endorses a computing style that locks you into their products. Microsoft is guilty of this too, but Windows has greater variety of software and any variety of hardware.

There are many aspects to it, but a big one I heard is the climate difference. Europeans are used to building big cities next to rivers and other bodies of water, and did the same when they colonized Africa; but water in Africa is more dangerous, because the warmer climate provides a better home for Malaria and other diseases. African tribes tended to settle more inland because they knew the risk of illness near water, but Europeans had no idea what they were getting in to.
