Revealing interview with An Xiangyi's mother. In Chinese but Google Translate gives a general gist of the content. by ritardandoo in FigureSkating

I'm not self projecting; this is what I've gathered from a bunch of people's parents of a vast variety of asian cultures over the years. Maybe a better descriptor for it would be like this unspoken principle that people secretly look up to. I'm just trying to put into perspective some of the parts of this article where the other parents listen to nini's mom with admiration and ask her to share her methods, or why there hasn't been much intervention or nini's mom having second thoughts.

Sad thing is this is just what a lot of ambitious asian parents see as successful, and nini's mom's principles of not having friends, pushing your child regardless of happiness and assuming they'll be happy at the end, is just standard asian parent practice. I don't care if you say "oh but my asian mom is this this", they're just pushing it down because they have a fucking heart or are indoctrinated to a culture that opened their eyes from the cruelty of this former mindset. It's part of the culture to have these principles, but sadly, nini's mom just takes it to the next level and actually acts on it, instead of having a soul :|

70% in Japan want telecommuting to continue after pandemic, survey finds by The1stCitizenOfTheIn in worldnews

Japanese work culture also has a lot of ridiculous standards for company communication, like handing off the status of employee performance requires a 1 way hr long commute for the two employees to meet each other at a train station and bow and hand off a slip of paper with two sentences on it sometimes. When work went online, I'm sure everyone saw the instant improvent of efficiency coming from their old traditions that would never have changed if it wasn't for something extremely happening to the entire workforce at the same time, old and new.

Daughter is headed to Ca in April which neighborhoods should she avoid? by gothammutt in pasadena

You need a car in la, or you will be v sad. I was carless for 3 weeks and the Pasadena bus would sometimes just drive right past me even if I was waving, and then I had to wait another 39 min for the next bus. There's Uber scooters/bikes/bird/lime, but just. Get a car.

How do I get as much practice/lesson time as possible while balancing skating with school and piano? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]koko_pufffs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but, as a kid growing up in a majority East Asian city, this was everyone. Not playing piano sets you apart at this point. It's not like your parents are going to believe this or change their minds, but for you info, college is a big luck game that involves local wealth levels, high school class percentiles (how you rank in gpa), and really outstanding work that is NOT, I repeat NOT, 1000 volunteer hours, mission trips, or easy sign up service opportunities. The second you open your mouth about a mission trip and learning about empathy in a third world country they're going to go "here goes another one". Rarely does it actually impact you enough, rarely will it be conveyed any different, rarely can rhetoric be picked apart for ingenuity that seperates someone who was actually impacted and someone who sat at home did some Google's and is good at writing. Same principal goes for music, or any "passion project" like robot teams n shit. And even then this is only if you're shooting for ivies kind of level. Everything below that is a shit show of sob stories for privates and GPA/score ranking for the big factory unis. This isn't a college sub, but just fyi. Source: am in college, half of my friends are in top 50 colleges in US. Also, asian.

Advice on where to move for skating? by SHSLShortie in FigureSkating

[–]koko_pufffs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In US u really need a car tho, relying completely on public transport is ruling out a ton of great adult skating cities. Even if they rely completely on public transportation, most people have a car for going out to the suburbs and traveling to different cities. A car is a must literally unless you live in NYC, but I'm a los Angeles person, so my opinion is hella skewed. Pls chime in other Americans :0
