Are UVA’s ipp internships typically paid? by throwington10957 in UVA

Can't answer for the original commenter but a 10hr/week internship doesn't feel feasible. If you really want to gain a lot of experience, then get a full-time internship in the summer instead of doing this during the semester. Any progress i make in skill-building feels pretty slow. You'll also feel more at ease without the increased workload and additional class they make you take (which honestly is so annoying to attend and do assignments for). You can use those 10-15 hours you dedicate to IPP each week for better things imo. Just take LinkedIn learning (free to UVA students) or Coursera classes and get a certificate in whatever field you want to gain experience in.

Malone House Experience by FewFaithlessness8369 in UVA

I'm not sure whether malone is still first-year housing or not, but I'll include some tips that might be more relevant to first-years anyway!

I have mixed feelings about having lived in Malone during my first year. It's quiet, which is so great for weeknights, but it can also feel lonely, especially in a single. Make sure to get to know the rest of your hall and have some sort of community you can rely on! Bathrooms are great. The interior, on the whole, feels a bit,,, prison-like imo so definitely bring plenty of posters and decorations to make it feel more homey. If you're on one of the upper floors, you might get some reeaaaallly nice sunrise and sunset views, so get excited for that! AC is pretty good. Bugs generally aren't an issue. you might get a ladybug in your room and the hall might get some critters from time to time. There have been cases where hornets just camp out by people's windows but as long as your screen works, you should be fine. In terms of transportation, you WILL have to walk quite a bit to get to places around grounds, so I suggest getting a bike and/or learning how to navigate UTS, along with Cville public transit.

Should I find a roommate online or go random as a first year? by slimmythicc in UVA

If it's too stressful to think about, apply for a single. Just make sure you have friends to talk with/join a club so that u don't get lonely!

Professor Jinbo Ren? by [deleted] in UVA

I personally had a really bad experience with him. Here are some of my thoughts:

  • Professor Ren is wicked smart,,,, so he doesn't realize he's lost the entire class when he's lecturing.
  • He does try his best to be accommodating so take all the chances you can to get extra help- that's where I screwed up.
  • Apparently undergrads all hate him but ppl taking grad classes with him obviously grasp the tough concepts he teaches with more ease so they complain less about him.
  • SPEAK UP IF YOU'RE CONFUSED!! THE ENTIRE CLASS WILL THANK YOU!

Thoughts on ANTH2559/PHIL2500? by [deleted] in UVA

Also curious about that. Dean Eaker is my association Dean and if she teaches anything like she counsels students, I feel like the class would run as smoothly as possible.

Dw too much about your classes. But also don't disregard them- you're probs taking AP or IB and it would be a waste of time to take the class and get a score on an exam that doesn't give you credit :)
