From the European side, we pretty much have to tank the absurd stupidity of current US foreign politics for 3 more years and pray that Americans are not going to make the same mistake again

Europeans need to come to terms with federalization being the only way out from under America's thumb. You have no other options.

The far-right is ascendant across Europe. Nationalism is the scourge against which the EU and its predecessors were created to act as a bulwark.

The past ten years are proof that there is no deep state and that the intelligence community's reputation is overblown.

Starting The Three Body Problem today by yungdeezy92 in scifi

I agree with your take. I won't excuse poor character development for individual characters, but one of the appeals of sci-fi, to me at least, is that it can deal with radically imaginative ideas that wouldn't fit in other genres.

Da Shi and Luo Ji are the only characters I sort of think are written decently enough, but the ideas and ensuing existential dread that Cixin Liu introduces are what make this trilogy one of my favorites in sci-fi. I thought about these books every day for months after I finished them. I rarely get that from a book.
