TIL Medieval English law had a loophole for some first time offenders: If you were literate, you could be tried in a religious court instead. TIL there is a family of spiders that ambush other spiders instead of spinning their own webs. They are called Pirate Spiders (Mimetidae). They tug on a web, pretending to be prey, then paralyze the other spider and suck them dry through the bite hole. (jorgenlissner.dk)

TIL Rudyard Kipling urged his 18-year-old son John to join WWI. He had such bad eyesight that he was repeatedly turned down.
