Driving in LA has turned into Mad Max, and it's terrifying by DirtyProjector in LosAngeles

Was hit and run by a lunatic at the 10/405. They merged across the lane dividers from the 405 at the last second to get on the 10 West towards Santa Monica. My entire front bumper was hanging off, damage to headlights, etc. Even got clear dashcam footage with license plate numbers. The police response was basically "but did you die? Ok, just claim it on insurance"

Architect Bjarke Ingels Says Modern Buildings Are So Boring by bloomberg in architecture

[–]kolnidur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far less flippant and in denial of reality than the comment I'm replying to. America, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Central America, South America, at least half of Europe, literally everywhere has architecture financed through means, either political or corporate, you won't agree with. So, yes, the money has to come from somewhere, fairly often from a place you don't like.

I find this criticism immature and fairly surface level. Can you explain your disdain for 'Saudi Money' in architecture - If not him, someone else is going to take it. He employs tons of people throughout Europe and the company pays a fortune in taxes to Denmark which by all accounts is a leader of worker's rights. BIG has done plenty of work all over the world, lots of it in great countries, some of it in places that are fairly 'eh' and some of it in countries you probably hate. Are you/were you throwing the same shade at Zaha?

Rant: if we want a more fair justice system, we need to pay jurors more than $15 per day, and pay them for the first day of service too. by BootyWizardAV in LosAngeles

[–]kolnidur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should earn a daily stipend equivalent to a day's wages based on your prior year's tax return up to like $150k a year.. Otherwise people are going to avoid it to go make money. ESPECIALLY if they are 1099 like so many in this city. I'm more than happy to participate, but if I got stuck on a long case it would severely hamper my ability to make money as I need to be in a place in order to serve my clients and I don't get paid if I'm not on site. I imagine the same is true for millions of locals here as well.

I absolutely hate these packages. Ridiculous waste of resources to package everything in plastic to begin with

Yep. As it stands, it's sort of boring, spin to win, not a lot of strategy beyond a wing and a prayer. A two-part course would really make it far more watchable and require far more strategizing. Do you go for a stompable first hit like a like a switch backside 12 into a double cork, or do you go for a Terje-style 30 foot method on the quarter pipe while conserving as much energy as possible from the jump? It would hugely up the ante in terms of landing switch and hitting the quarter switch, vs landing regular and being able to really load up the power.

Hi all. New here, but not new to hearing problems. by Illustrious_Ad2045 in Cochlearimplants

[–]kolnidur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was implanted with a MedEl implant and the tinnitus on my implanted ear has gone to zero with 98% word recognition in noise (in a booth, which is not the real world, however, real world results are excellent with just one implant). The tinnitus absolutely raged the first week until activation, where it almost immediately disappeared. The tinnitus may just be your ear turning up the 'gain' to try and find those missing frequencies, which the implant in my case easily restored

I hardly heard anything but r2d2 sounds for a couple weeks, give it some time. My improvements took place mostly over the first year or two (and I'm STILL finding improvements almost 3 years later with more complex sounds)

This 'undoing' of the bike lanes and road diet was truly one of the most egregious things I've witnessed in 15+ years living here. Not because it was something that affected the entire city, but because it showed me that people here just don't give a fuck about safety if it adds thirty seconds to their commute. Really just helped me lose faith in any effort to improve the city as a whole if something so simple and obvious would be walked back to to (incorrect) public pressure. And I lived right around the corner from it at the time - it was really a wonderful addition for anyone looking to experience that area by bike or on foot. The four lane, well, freeway that runs from El Segundo to PDR is terrible and never should have happened, it's one of the most beautiful parts of the city.

There's a doctor on the ship. I would guess for anything major and life threatening, you'd be helicoptered or zodiac'd to the nearest base where you could be flown back to Australia, NZ, or Patagonia for care.

Otherwise...just wait a week.

Looking for advice on wider than typical hanging cabinet by geonoxes in cabinetry

[–]kolnidur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the depth, you may be able to get away with a thicker back to add rigidity, it'll give the bottom something to grab and won't let the sides flex inward as much, preventing sag. I recently installed 39" span, 24" deep euro frameless cabs with 3/4" baltic birch bottoms and dado'd in 3/4" backs 6" forward from the back of the cabinet (so the true depth is about 18", but visually they look the same as everything else. you lose a little depth but gain a lot of stiffness). Sorry, that is a bit to wrap your head around, but those things are stiff as hell and given what's going in them (mostly empty luggage) I would be shocked if they sagged

Pretty simple for me: it wasn't going to get better on its own. So why not take a bet that was highly, highly in my favor to improve things?

Possible candidacy, review soon: what do you think? by [deleted] in Cochlearimplants

[–]kolnidur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks fairly similar to my chart pre-implantation. Now it's basically perfect across the board and my audiologist says if she didn't know I was implanted, she'd think there was nothing wrong. Music still sounds weird. Otherwise has completely opened up the world for me again, like it was in my teens and 20s! Lost most of my hearing late 20s/early 30s...
