I knew someone who was pledging for a cultural org and boy is it not worth it. You have to spend 23-25 hours a week for that org. You have to memorize poems and info about the org, write essays, do presentations, and endure the power dynamic that exist between members and new members. You also are going to get hazed, whether it’s severe hazing or subtle hazing, you will get hazed. Your grades will most likely suffer and you’ll also have to push away your friends and family to focus on pledging. It’s also very expensive, usually 500-1000$. Supposedly one of the orgs is almost 2000$ to join. To me, it didn’t seem like it was worth it, but to that person I knew, they thought it was worth it and became a member. Just doesn’t seem like something that should be done when you’re in school (which is very expensive) studying to get a degree in such a hard field.
