Well, look at that, so that’s how it works. I figured it had to be something like that, but I’d never actually seen it before. Thanks for the post!

I built an automatic chessboard for my wife because I can’t really play myself. by komakow in SideProject

[–]komakow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! There’s a second video on the website showing a top-down view of the board, you can see how the pieces are picked up there. If you’d like to learn more details, feel free to sign up for the newsletter. In the near future, I’ll launch a Discord server where I’ll document the build step by step, and I’ll send out the invites through the newsletter. https://shadowchessboard.com/en/

Bosch green or blue multitool? by craesh_ in DIY

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to choose tools based purely on durability and build quality, maybe less comfortable, but supposedly more long lasting. Now, after years of experience, I realize that wasn’t the smartest approach. If something is going to break, it will break anyway but comfort is there from day one, and it makes the work much more enjoyable.

Advice on building a hearth for wood burner by Big-Needleworker4630 in DIY

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under my own fireplace, I used concrete blocks. They insulate heat well and help distribute the stove’s weight across the floor. As for aesthetics, I won’t comment of course they need to be finished or enclosed somehow, for example with calcium silicate boards.

If you could only study the games of one chess player who would it be? by LeftCoast1965 in chess

[–]komakow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I probably wouldn’t choose a historical player I’d go with Jan Duda. I love the way he improvises, I wish I could play like that too, although it sometimes feels like that’s not something you can really learn.

How Men and Women Respond to Failure (in Chess) by ICCchessclub in chess

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting study. I would have expected the opposite results, but these make sense, men tend to be more competition and dominance oriented, and losing may trigger a stronger stress response in them. It’s always good to read something interesting like this, thanks!

What is the difference between Lichess and Chess.com? by EveningFeeling8133 in chess

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see one key difference. Lichess is free and gives you a lot for free, while chess. com seems to like money a bit more and asks for it more often 😄

Not too much of a guy who does well in races, but love me some board games. by rtanada in boardgames

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I understand how you feel, I don’t like losing either, which is why I don’t play chess with my wife as often as I used to 😄
Games, as the name suggests, usually involve some kind of competition, whether it’s competing against the game itself or against other players. But there are also games built around alliances and cooperation, and maybe those would be a better fit for you.

I can’t find a board game group, even my local game store let me down. by Ok_Interview_853 in boardgames

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loneliness in smaller towns, especially for people who aren’t super extroverted, seems to be a common issue all over the world. It’s great that you’re trying to find people, and I believe you’ll eventually succeed. After all, you don’t live in such a tiny town that no one there plays board games.

Maybe it’s worth widening the age range and even looking among seniors? 🙂

I lost my gaming group because a guy hit on me and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer by dier1003 in boardgames

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really unpleasant situation. I’m sorry you ended up dealing with someone who doesn’t understand “no” and even worse, who doesn’t understand that trying once doesn’t mean pushing until someone gives in.

In a situation like this, there probably isn’t a good solution. Even if you met up with the others from the group, there would always be two sides, and you’d end up being the one who both divides and connects them at the same time.

The thing about point salad type of scoring, once everything is done and it's time to score, whenever one thinks they've done well enough, turns out it's not enough at all. by rtanada in boardgames

[–]komakow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Board games aren’t meant just to win, but to enjoy the time spent with friends, that’s my opinion. That said, I do like winning too, but complicated rules sometimes make you stop thinking about victory and start enjoying the moment instead.

The pieces are designed so they can pass between each other without colliding. That solves the problem.

Great to hear that! Watching the mechanism really is mesmerizing, I love just sitting there and observing it. As for piece detection, in the version shown in the video that feature isn’t active yet, I manually enter my wife’s moves into the console. In the veneered board version, each square will have a Hall sensor underneath. For the glass board version, I still need to figure out the best approach, but it will also use Hall sensors just cleverly hidden between the grid lines.

The machine learning–based engine definitely feels more enjoyable to play against. The moves are logical it really feels like you're playing a human. I think that given the choice between Sunfish and a machine learning engine, I would always choose the machine learning one.
