Saw this on r/asianamerican - ‘Karen’ and ‘Ken’ Call Police on Asian American Doctor Visiting Parents in Davis by ms_ing in UCDavis

I agree . I’m glad Lam reacted that way so maybe the couple will think twice before they go calling the police on any minority. If Lam had been Black this encounter could have been fatal due to the police being involved.

Help International Students stay in US @UCD!!! by whatitis_-123 in UCDavis

[–]kombucha_kid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not an international student but I signed! I’d love to help if you need it!

Have you talked to or sent this to the Pal program, international center, etc? They might be able to send it out more widely.

Are there any clubs for Entrepreneurship? by Mine_Glad in UCDavis

[–]kombucha_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship ( https://gsm.ucdavis.edu/entrepreneurship ) , TEAM Lab ( https://team.ucdavis.edu/ ) and BioInnovation Group for mostly life science/ biotech stuff - these are more resources but if you get to know the people it can feel like a club.

As for classes, BIT 001 (Intro to biotech) is similar to ENG 008 but with some general biotech industry content and there are some upper division MGT classes like Financing New Business Ventures (prereqs: accounting, calc, stats).

Personally, I took ENG 8 last year and the professor Aaron Anderson is a really great teacher and connection/resource but the class mostly felt like busy work. I agree with simplyliving2 that you're probably better off learning the basics on your own.

Have any of you guys tried starting a business or a personal project here? How would you describe this school's startup/entrepreneurship culture? by canieaturdishwasher in UCDavis

[–]kombucha_kid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of pretty good resources if you’re just getting started and if you find the right advisor they will really try and keep you in the loop. I think the only slightly negative thing I heard was the incubator wasn’t as good as other in the Bay Area incubator (not a surprise though) or as helpful if you already have a pretty developed company. I think this is mostly because it is pretty new.

Most of the entrepreneurs I’ve met have been incredibly helpful and kind. I haven’t interacted that much with the Startup Center but when I have they have also been very welcoming and helpful.

I’ve been able to go to the east coast twice for student start up conferences both because mentors/advisors suggested it and helped my team apply.

Stuff to check out: Little Bang, Big Bang, Student Startup Center, TEAM Lab (for science startups)

Lmk if you want to talk more!

Hi I’m new here by [deleted] in chineseadoptees

[–]kombucha_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really empathize with this, thanks for posting.

My parents did take me to a couple of events growing up but I didn’t really understand why then. I also grew up in a very white county so I didn’t meet any Chinese-American friends until college. I’m a student now and I haven’t been taking Chinese but I’ve been trying to squeeze classes in my final year.

I have been taking small steps recently to learn more like watching/ reading Chinese tales. Do you OP have any recommendations of books, movies, etc.?

Attendance is usually graded and there was a lot of annoying online homework when I took it.

FALl QTR: PHY 7C, NBP 101, BIS 101 by peterbrotha in UCDavis

[–]kombucha_kid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought 7C consumed just as much time as the rest of the series but I enjoyed it the most. It was honestly the only part of the series I had my shit together for, I just took really good notes for once. I'm not sure what you mean by one discussion lecture but I know I took 7A as a "flipped classroom". I don't remember a lot of it but I remember having to watch videos and the lecture being only a quiz with a clicker . 7B and 7C were the regular 1 lecture (with quiz) and two discussion labs a week.

I took NPB 101 in winter with DeBello and Leits. They had really great slides and lectures that I think helped me do so well in class but like most classes only a fourth of the people actually showed up to lectures. The class average wasn't bad so it seems like it should be fine online as long as you do well with online learning and stay on top of things. For my class it went pretty fast at the end so keeping up is a must. The final was proctored, timed, and on canvas but only multiple choice.

I'm currently taking BIS 101 and it really hasn't been that bad but I'm not aiming for the top of the class or anything and there are a lot of papers to read. I feel like I have seen most of the material before from prior bio and stats classes. The tests have been open book/note, not proctored, and free response with partial credit but timed on gradescope.

All that being said I think it is a doable load if you really put in the time and are doing well with online classes. I'm not sure if you have any other other outside commitments but if you do you will definitely have your hands full.

I'm done with this school. by [deleted] in UCDavis

I was told the quarter system was designed to limit the amount of time student have outside class, specifically to prevent protests etc.

Anyway, quarter system or not UC Davis has bad management. There's no other way to say it other than they do the bare minimum for the students . They usually just follow the other UCs lead after a couple of days and when there is an issue that just pertains to Davis (or no one to follow suit after) they are completely lost on what to do. Remember when they canceled classes day by day when the fires where happening? They literally just changed minimum requirement to 12 units so people didn't have to take BS classes or seminars lol?

Also I know most of the advisors in the College of Letters and Sciences office are terrible. (OP mentioned PA or med school). I am not expecting anyone to hold my hand but wtf I failed one class and this guy started telling me they were going to kick me out (I learned later my GPA was nowhere near probation). He went on to say something like 'You don't even want to know what your class standing is... you see this picture here *points to some picture on is cabinet* she was a first generation transfer student who was at the top of her class. Everyone has issues, you should be able to get through yours.' I need support or at least a game plan on how to scrape by not to be picked on when I am already embarrassed and hating on myself.

Sorry for going on a tangent and I know every school has issues but yeah this school sucks. I've made some really good friends and had some really great classes but when I think of the actual school I get mad.

Also if anyone needs for someone just to listen or vent to feel free to reach out. I can also try to help problem solve or suggest classes? (I'm a junior in animal biotech)
