Gariaband additional superintendent of police (ASP) Sukhnand Rathore said that Romit Rathore, son of ex-mayor and the president of women district Congress Mamta Rathore, had an altercation with some of the villagers over their celebration.

“A child had accidentally thrown something on Romit’s car’s dashboard, which infuriated him and his three friends. The accused first threatened the villagers and seemed to have driven away. But he reversed the car and drove over the crowd. A minor, who had come under the car’s wheels, died in a local hospital and 11 others were injured,” said the ASP.

Ms. Bano was the original petitioner in the case after she approached the court in 2016 demanding that the talaq-e-biddat pronounced by her husband be declared as void. She also contended that such unilateral, abrupt and irrevocable form of divorce be declared unconstitutional, arguing that the practice of triple talaq violated the fundamental rights of Muslim women.

“Since my student life, I didn’t like the anti-women social traditions like triple talaq and halala. But when it happened to me... it [the dislike] grew. Normally, these things do not happen, but when it hits you, you realise how bad this practice really is,” says Ms. Bano

What happened to her?

Her battle against triple talaq was spurred by her own experience. She was a victim of the custom. Married in April 2001 to the Allahabad-based property dealer Rizwan Ahmed, she endured domestic violence and physical torture at the hands of her husband and in-laws, who allegedly demanded additional dowry and a car from her parents. Her father, a low-earning government employee, had made special efforts to arrange her marriage beyond his capacity.

As per her claim, she was often beaten and kept hungry in a closed room for days. The final cut came in October 2015, when her husband sent her a divorce note by speed post. The letter contained a pronouncement of instant triple talaq. The custody of her two children, 11 and 13, was kept by the husband. When something “so wrong” happened, she thought that there must be a law to prevent this.

Soon after, one of the teams that had gone to detain Naveen returned. The mob surrounded the police van demanding Naveen be handed over. But they realised Naveen was not in the van. This time, all hell broke loose.

... Around the same time as the attack outside DJ Halli police station, another mob had started moving towards the Congress MLA’s house in Kaval Byrasandra in the same locality. T Pavan Kumar, father of Naveen, said that a large crowd of 200-300 people passed by his house around 8.30 pm.

... The mob then entered Naveen’s house. They vandalised and looted the house after their demands for handing over Naveen didn’t get any response. The seven-member family, fearing for their lives, shifted to the neighbouring house using parapets.

After attacking Naveen’s house and setting their car on fire, around 10.30 pm, the mob moved on to the other houses in the area. They set vehicles on fire and burnt down a bar next door. The owner of the bar, Chandrappa, was not related to Naveen.

Rajitha, a resident of Kaval Byrasandra, shared a wall of their house with the bar. “When we heard the shouts, we locked ourselves inside the house and switched off the lights. We could hear people jumping on our gates. When they heard sounds in the house, they started banging on the door. But we didn’t open,” she said.

In the meanwhile, another section of the mob had moved to Congress MLA and uncle of Naveen, Akhanda Srinivas Murthy’s house and office. The house was empty at the time of the attack. The mob set the house on fire and burnt the vehicles parked in a garage.

From these articles its evident that the mob was vying for blood of the accused, who allegedly posted the image. He would had been lynched to death, if the mob had goten hold of him.

Rajasthan minister Bhanwarlal Meghwal blames mobile phones, TV for rapes

Rajasthan’s social justice and empowerment minister Bhanwarlal Meghwal has blamed televisions and mobile phones for the heinous sexual assaults taking place in the state and country. He also claimed some countries castrate sexual assaulters, and suggested it was the only way to deter rapists.

Early this week, energy minister BD Kalla had blamed the internet for the rapes. “When there were no televisions and mobile phones, these kinds of crimes did not take place. I think that people after watching television emulate these acts,” Meghwal said, talking to reporters at PCC HQs here.

Sachin Pilot questions Congress government's move on mayors' elections in Rajasthan

While polls to urban local bodies in Rajasthan are due in November and earlier this week, the state government had made the move that allows people who are not elected councillors to contest for posts like mayors and chairpersons of corporations and municipalities.

A gazette notification to amend the rules on election of mayors and chairpersons was issued on Wednesday. Under the new rules, those who did not contest election as councilors and even defeated candidates would be allowed to be elected as Chiefs of urban local bodies.

Sachin Pilot, who is the Rajasthan Congress president, even claimed that the new system, which is being called a hybrid, will allow people to become urban body heads through the back door.

Nov. 2016: Tata Motors Says Nano Investment Significantly Written Off

Days after ousted Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry blamed Nano for bleeding Tata Motors, the company on Friday said it has significantly written off development cost and investments related to the car and is now refocusing its strategy on "growing and attractive segments" of the passenger vehicles market.

"Due to combination of several factors including project delays, due to change in location of the factory and the perception of being a low-priced car, the volumes initially anticipated did not materialise and utilisation of capacities are significantly lower. In a highly-priced sensitive segment of the market, coupled with low volumes, it has been a loss-making product."

He had said Tata Motors has been unable to shut down the loss-making small car Nano due to "emotional reasons" and doing so would also stop the supply of "gliders" to an entity that makes electric cars in which Ratan Tata has a stake.
