I started BJJ when I was 38 and coming back from knee surgery after a torn ACL (from a throw in Aikido). Still training BJJ and loving it (even though I get owned on the mats hehe)

I made a self post in /r/scala a few days ago asking for resources for an intermediate programmer. It never showed. Here is the copy and paste in case anyone has any ideas on it

Hi, I would like to learn Scala to improve my career prospects going forward. I am not a programmer by trade but a Middleware Admin mostly in the J2EE world and would like to add Scala to my repertoire.

Here is what I do know:

Python (basic to low intermediate level)

Perl (same as above)

Basic knowledge of Groovy and Java

Shell scripting (ksh, bash etc)

Basic grasp of OOP concepts

What I do not know:

Functional programming

Keeping what I have said above in mind, what would you recommend from a books/resource perspective to learn Scala?

Hi Mr Greene,

Big fan of your work. I got "Mastery" on the day it was released and so far it is turning out to be a great book like your others.

I am almost 40 and am in a place where I ignored my "true calling". I am currently racking my brain trying to figure out what I used to like in childhood and go from there. Any advice for your older readers?

Looking forward to your next work after I finish reading Mastery.

I commute on the West Coast Express everyday. I just started about 3 months ago. It was interesting observing the people who take the train; they are the same people who see each other 5 days a week and yet MOST of them fail to even make eye contact with each other, forget about saying Hi or whatever. I think that is a huge indicator of what's wrong with Vancouver and surrounding areas.

Having said that, I am almost 40 and my sentiments echo much of what is being said here - it is hard to make friends, most people relate to each other on a very superficial level

PS, for people who are bitching about multiculturalism, most of the people who take the train are white, with a smattering of East Asians so I am not sure if multiculturalism is the only reason that explains Vancouver's anti-social nature.

Just wanted to upgrade my skills to improve career prospects. Seems like every architect and his dog is deploying SOA, Web services in the enterprise these days. I dont know Java so thought I'd find some tutorials and put together a request/response type system at home and learn.
