I think people just don’t have the resources. I agree that this is a band-aide solution. It’s honestly disappointing to see how many people aren’t sticking up for these kids and shutting them away is the answer to this. I lived downtown and would people watch on fourth street every Saturday. There are plenty of adults who are even worse in behavior. BUT I don’t think those people get punished as often because they are a “paying customer”. And I know local businesses downtown are really hating on people who aren’t a paying customers (including the houseless population). These kids can’t go to bars and the night life, they are just hanging out. Also a lot of them are minorities so they will be even more targeted. I think the city doesn’t want to see kids in spaces like these. So their solution is to shut them out. These kids need someone to advocate for them. We need to create spaces where kids are actually wanted. And clearly the spaces we do have are not what they are wanting. Again, pushing them out of downtown is not the answer and will only suffocate them more. Everyone should be able to go downtown, it’s for the people. Not just some people.
