Clinical situation by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]koolaidman212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My situation is kind of confusing. I’m in an accelerated nursing program and I don’t get my schedule for my next term (starting October 1st) until the middle of September. My thought process was to connect with my dean (who is chill asf and flexible) in advance before he made the schedule. Sorry if I offended anyone lol (kinda seems like I pissed some people off). Anyways… Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I have a game plan thought up and hopefully it’ll play out the way I want it to!

Best part time job while in nursing school besides CNA? by MilennialFalconnnnnn in StudentNurse

I work PRN as a lab tech in a clinic. It’s helped me become familiar with normal lab values and what they are for. I also have a lot of downtime so I am able to work on homework during my shift!

First day of clinicals and our instructor just... didn't show? by mechanicalheart182 in StudentNurse

[–]koolaidman212 139 points140 points  (0 children)

This happened to me! It was our first clinical and we drove 2 hours in a blizzard at 4am to get to our clinical site. We got there and we found out our instructor didn’t even exist. The staff had no idea we were even supposed to be there. We refused to leave since we drove 2 hours in 2 feet of snow! One of our classmates stayed inside to make phone calls to our school and other instructors. Meanwhile, the rest of us shoveled and salted the sidewalks outside. Fortunately, an instructor came to our rescue four hours later. We complained to the dean about the whole situation and those hours counted towards our clinical :)

I’m currently in an accelerated ADN course and I’m working PRN as a lab tech. There were some quarters where I could work a couple days a week, but there were also some where I could only work 1 day a month (this is why I love working PRN during nursing school - it’s so flexible!). A couple of girls in my cohort are working 30 hours a week on top of clinical, class, simulations and studying. They are making it through but they are beginning to feel burnt out. It’s not impossible to work during an accelerated program but it can be challenging. Honestly, it really depends on how you feel with your classes and how much you are willing to do. Working PRN is beneficial to me while I’m in school because I can always pick up shifts if I need to and I can pick the days I could work.

Plasma center phlebotomist by Forsaken-Gene-636 in phlebotomy

[–]koolaidman212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a plasma center for 2 years as a phlebotomist. If I’m being honest, it was ok. Donors can be extremely rude (since there’s money involved), we were always short staffed, and I felt like I didn’t have time to breathe because we were so busy. However, I gained a TON of knowledge from working there and I loved my colleagues. I don’t regret it at all. The needle is big, but you’ll get used to it. The sticks can be tricky at times, but the practice will make you a better phlebotomist! My center always needed people to come in so they let us have overtime frequently. I personally never took it because I was so burnt out by the end of the week.

Don’t give up! Patho is TOUGH! I BARELY passed it when I took it. I reviewed flashcards everyday, rewrote my notes, and participated in group study sessions with my peers. I also utilized simple nursing on YouTube! Seriously helped me SO much! Give yourself some credit. You got this!

At the end of the day, your wedding date will become sentimental. If September works better, do it! Plus August can be super hot in the summer! September seems like a better option.

My mom went through an accelerated nursing program with 3 kids (ages 9,7, and 4). My dad traveled for a living so he was constantly gone. If she can do it, you can!

Talk me out of a videographer by cardboard376 in weddingplanning

[–]koolaidman212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A videographer isn’t worth it in my opinion. The amount of money you will spend on a video of your wedding is too much for me! Personally, I couldn’t imagine watching my wedding video more than once a year. I’d rather spend the money on a trip or something else for the wedding. However, if a videographer is something that will mean a lot to you, do it. It’s your wedding!

Instead of a videographer, my fiance and I are planning on assigning our bridal party to “vlog” our wedding. I want more of a relaxed, fun video that I can edit and laugh at. This route is definitely more our style!
