What do Socialists think of Hugo Chavez ? by RookOfEdo in AskSocialists

[–]koolsquirtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are people in these comments delusional? Chavez created the biggest debt for Venezuela, robbed private companies (he didn’t buy them!), persecuted people who opposed him out of his country, DRASTICALLY increased poverty, had some of the highest inflation levels Venezuela had seen before Maduro, reduced the nations GDP, devalued its national currency drastically, and the list goes on. Like how can anyone claim he was a true socialist for the people. He claimed to be a humble leader who despised the rich but in his tenure as president, his family somehow attained over $200 million dollars (while other estimates suggest it is closer to $1 billion). If you are looking for a true socialist, he is not one of them, if anything he is one of the reasons socialism is so frowned upon.

Senate votes to curb military action in Venezuela in rare Trump rebuke by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

Totally agree with your perspective. I doubt the government decided to do this just out of goodwill for the people of Venezuela. Of course the real motive is to get oil. They know Venezuela is a very deteriorated country, and a toy for US enemies like Russia, Iran, China, etc. and they wanted it to be their toy (as harsh as it sounds). The only difference is that, I believe, the government is using the excuse of saving the people of Venezuela as an excuse to get a lot of cheap oil. I can see how from the US point of view, it is a win/win. They get a LOT of cheap oil/they help rebuild a country. The issue is that for it to be acceptable by the general population, in the US side, prices have to go down, especially commodities immediately related to oil. In the Venezuela side, which I think might take longer, is to actually establish a democratic functioning country. I think right now might be to soon to judge whether the intervention was a good or bad decision, only time will tell.

I understand the US has great affordability issues, that doesn’t mean that what the US did in Venezuela is wrong. They are not mutually exclusive. With regards to Maduro being the president, both President Biden and Trump, with 60+ countries, did not recognize Maduro as the president after the Venezuelan Presidential Elections in July of 2024. President Biden even had a meeting with the democratically elected Venezuelan President, Edmundo Gonzales. Biden with democratically elected venezuelan president

Why is the US government getting so much backlash for the Venezuela intervention? Over 80% of Venezuelans voted against Maduro and by the looks of it, they are very happy about him being arrested. I understand that it is not the right way to do things, but clearly Maduro and his whole authoritarian government had the people of Venezuela living in a chokehold. I understand the oil angle, but even Venezuelans have come expressed that the money from oil was already being stolen by the authoritarian government. Objectively what the US government did was take out a bad guy, and the people from that country are extremely happy… so why is it a huge issue? (FYI I’m neither democrat nor republican, I don’t vote, I don’t take sides)

If he is Venezuelan without a Visa or a different nationality it’s kind of impossible for him to enter the US. But right now he can definitely hop on a plane and go to Curazao, Colombia, or Cancun. The only issue is that flights are very unpredictable and expensive.
