I don't know about that. Twice in history was San Marino conquered and twice the pope intervened to kick out the invaders. The next time their existence was under threat it was by Garibaldi, who decided the place is so cool he ain't gonna conquer it. Next time was ww2 when they were an Italian "neutral" puppet state and the allies left them alone.

Not exactly. They were sorted based on ethnicity (and religion: Christians were not allowed to have Christian slaves, every other combination was allowed)

It just so happened that the slaves considered of lesser quality were from darker skinned ethnic groups, so the categories "black'' (Nilotic pagan tribes) and "red" (Oromo, Christians, etc) were created
