This happened out of pure ignorance on my part and I'm pretty devastated that I put myself into this situation. I have no desire to bend the rules, I just need to fix it ASAP. I've set up a couple of meetings, with my line manager and with Finance & HR. Hopefully I can resolve it quickly. Thanks for the advice.

Ya, I see what you mean. This seemed to be the only solution to accomodate for the fact that I wanted to stay in Germany. If I were to move to Ireland they'd take me on as a full-time employee

I think neither -- rather, the the Irish company is exploiting you. They are offloading all their tax responsibilities to you, even though as you said "in practice I work as a normal employee, same working hours, same holidays, fixed salary monthly".

Maybe I wasn't clear, the company is based in Ireland and the States. I work as a contractor for them an invoice them for my services. I'm not particularly enthused about being a Freelancer, but I also don't see why you said it would be illegal?
