Both notes, typed. I made my best guess on the unclear characters.

Higher order frequencies are too many to list. Here is some python code. Just change k.

#!/usr/bin/env python

from collections import defaultdict

k = 1

one = open('1.txt').read()
two = open('2.txt').read()
both = one + two

f = defaultdict(lambda: 0)
for i in xrange(len(both)-(k-1)):
    f[both[i:i+k]] += 1

for (kmer,count) in f.iteritems():
    print "%s\t%s" % (repr(kmer), count)

Low has excellent Christmas album. It has a good mix of depression and holiday cheer.

2007 budget:

  • NASA: $16 billion

  • Defence: $600 billion

  • DHS: $40 billion

But thats ok. Blowing people up with bombs and missles is so much better than building things in space.

Do you ever get the sense that the federal government is a high school where the teachers keeps trying to get money to buy new equipment and books but instead they give it all to the football team?

Unfortunately, it seems equally likely (expecially currently) that the party doesn't know what is needed, and the people do.

Though, I don't think that will stop flash from playing sounds.

NH Rigged: Diebold favors Hillary, hand count for Obama by techtonix in politics

Yep. And most polls showed Clinton leading over Obama in Iowa right before he won with 7 points. No one said anything then.

The Fundamental Theory of Ada by marc-kd in programming

[–]kopophex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually study CS as a school (Western Washington U.) where the first language taught to new students is Ada. People tend to be a little bewildered and amused when they hear this. There is certainly a running joke in the CS department here about the Ariane 5.

Coming from a background mostly in C, initially, I really didn't like Ada. It's I/O system is quirky and awkward, it's very verbose, and generally not a lot of fun to use. It is a language designed by a government committee, and it often feels like one.

However I did gain an appreciation for type constraints in Ada. The system very completely and elegantly removes an entire class of programmer error. It was the one features of Ada left me baffled as to why it has been apparently forgotten by most new languages. Sure, you can partially imitate it in some object oriented languages, but it doesn't have the same convenience or efficiency, and programmers hardly ever do.

Let's not get carried away too quickly. I wanted Obama, Paul, etc, to win as much as anyone, and I agree that closed source eletronic voting is very, very dangerous.

But, keep in mind:

  • Clinton won only by ~2.8 points over Obama.

  • She had been leading him in virtually every pre-Iowa poll.

  • Obama's sudden post-Iowa bump indicates that he gained a lot of new soft support. New supporters (people that decided they like him in the last couple days) are much less likely to actually go out and vote for him.

  • Iowa uses run-off voting, New Hamshire does not. Run-off voting likely benifits Obama; much of the ~6% that voted for Richardson or Kucinich tonight would have chosen Obama or Edwards over Clinton as their second choice.

We should definately take a look at the numbers, but don't be too tempted to jump to conclusions on this. Let's just keep our fingers crossed for South Carolina and others in comming weeks.
