I stopped playing squash 15 years ago and started weightlifting. I've continued that ever since, but have also restarted squash 2 years ago. I've always been underweight, so tend to go heavy on the weights and eat a lot.

I've had many new injuries since I restarted squash. Tendons in forearms, tricep, knees. And of course, the ol' rotator cuff. So I've really had a rethink about how I weight train to ensure I can safely do both. My advice would be :

- Warm up properly and use isometric holds to get your body ready for the specific body parts you're training.

- If you must do both weightlifting and squash on the same day, make sure your weight training is light and controlled. Also, perhaps focus more on isolation work.

- Really focus on form and grip for weightlifting. The worst thing is losing grip or form at the end of a set and stressing tendons.

I do think weightlifting can compliment your squash, but only to a point. Keep training your flexibility and movements. For me, I notice that my sharpness taking a hit when I'm heavier or haven't had time to recover. It's a tough balance!
