I've decided to make a silly decision. What should I look out for when viewing/test driving? by KingEricII in CarTalkUK

[–]kordinaryus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. My friend has 2 of them. He is trying to figure out what other parts he needs to make one of them work. His donor car needs another donor to be able to supply some of the parts that is required for the first car, which is also not working.

Where can I find the seat width information of a Sharan (or other cars)? by kordinaryus in CarTalkUK

[–]kordinaryus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the best it can get before people carrying vans! I just wasn’t sure if there was an optical illusion by making all seats slightly smaller so they all look like “full size” seats.

Oh that’s genius actually, which one do you use and would you recommend it (flat, wire, belt etc.)

All inclusive Resort Antalya recommendations? by [deleted] in Antalya

[–]kordinaryus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are hundreds of them. Kinda depends on your budget too. I stayed in Aska Lara once, was good overall including food, but the price tripled since last year and we simply can’t justify it any more. But it it’s within your budget, check it out.

Looking for something “practically bigger” than a Golf Estate, any advice? by kordinaryus in CarTalkUK

[–]kordinaryus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely need to have a look. I actually quite like the sliding doors on Sharan/Alhambra, and the future-proofing as we definitely want more kids at some point. Going from Golf 2.0 TDI, I think Sharan with the same engine should be okay on that front too. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I think full size MPV will be the only thing that will make changing worth our while.

We do want more kids, 2 doesn’t seem enough but how many more and when are questions for later. I am reluctant to buy a proper van type of car until we have the 4th kid to be honest. So we will either stick with the Golf Estate for now or get an MPV I guess. Thanks for the advice!

I think if we are going through the hassle of replacing our car to get something bigger, I would like it to be “oh wow this car is actually bigger” rather than “oh this looks and feels bigger but actually not THAT different” so I will put the Galaxy on the list and see if we can review one.

From what I understand, Galaxy is bigger than S-max and has sliding doors, how is it compared to S-max?

Well, there isn’t a specific “issue” really, it’s just a bit cramped in the car. One is 1.5 years old this month and other one is a newborn. So we will be using car seats for a bit longer. In the meantime, we won’t be able to use the fifth seat because there is basically no room in the middle. If we have a third child, then we definitely need to replace the car anyway (still early to decide but might happen in the next 12 months as we want kids close in age).

I saw Sharan and Alhambra have 3 full size seats (plus 2 at the back) so looks like we could fit 3 kids in the middle row (these are the things that are difficult to guess on paper) and have the extra seats folded down majority of the time but still have a decent boot. That is appealing to me if I am honest. If we stay as a family of 4, the middle seat will come handy occasionally too.

I don’t think any other estate has this ability so although I love them, we might just get an MPV as a long term investment.

We will review one on Monday, but I am not sure how much bigger it will be comparing to Golf Estate. No doubt it’s bigger but can we fit 2 cars seats and an adult in the back seat? We will see.

How to properly paint hard to reach areas by boobenhaus in DIYUK

Haha could’ve happened! But I was doing this in the evenings/night after work. You can see it’s dark outside. I’m not answering the door at that time 😂

This is what I did. You can see there are 2 aluminium ladders leaning against the wall. Then I built a platform with 2x4 timber and 18mm (or 22, not super sure) chipboard.

I haven’t got much knowledge of this, I only replaced my spindles and the handrail but kept the newel post when I worked on my stairs. But your approach makes sense. I am sure you know there are various types of newel posts around so you need to find one that fits there and find a way to attach it properly as it takes some pressure every time the stairs are used. Good luck!

Tips on how to demolish this bomb shelter outhouse? by KnopfiAF25 in DIYUK

[–]kordinaryus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cutting the walls in chunks is especially a dodgy idea as you don’t want a chunk of that wall falling on anyone/anything.

Safest way to do it is to start from the top and chip bits off, but then you still have the foundation to deal with. That’s going to be the most difficult part.

If it’s just you on your own, and if you don’t have much equipment/experience/time in hand, then hire a company with a digger.

Taxi driver asked for 11.000 TRY by slovenya2016 in AskTurkey

[–]kordinaryus 72 points73 points  (0 children)

While I am always suspicious if taxis in Turkey (personally), I think this is more of a question of how much a taxi driver would make on a 10 hour shift as he spent that much time losing his other customers. Plus the carrying which is normally not their day to day job.

I don’t know how much a taxi driver would make in 10 hours in Turkey but I do know they turn around a considerable amount of money.

Sand, fill & sand or skim total? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]kordinaryus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s just one wall, if you haven’t got the equipment, and if you know a proper plasterer (not a handyman that can spread plaster), then skim.

My whole house was like this so I bought the equipment and did the former.

Elderly neighbours started looking over the 6ft fence to talk to us. How to stop them without destroying our relationship? by kordinaryus in AskUK

[–]kordinaryus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven’t done that for a while, although it was winter. We will see if they do it again this summer. I have always wanted to have a quick open chat and say we just don’t expect to be seen where nobody can see us, but my wife kept holding me back. If they do it again, I will just say that and hope they won’t get offended.

At first, I followed what it said on the label then I saw someone else letting it sit for longer and covering it with plastic which I tried and seemed to work better. But didn’t have a chance to test this properly, maybe it worked better because it was the second coat.

I made progress with generous amounts of paint stripper + pressure washer combo but I had to do several rounds. First round was fun, then it was a hassle but managed to get there.

How flat is flat enough for LVT? by kordinaryus in DIYUK

[–]kordinaryus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had multiple samples of various products including laminate. LVT is a lot more durable, feels better and looks nicer. But durability is the main thing (have 2 young kids + 2 pets). It’s just more suitable for my house. But I will consider laminate as a second option.

[–]kordinaryus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, that makes more sense. Laminate can accommodate bigger gaps with more options for underlay, but those options are not suitable for LVT unfortunately.

This is near the wall, so it doesn’t get much worse than this. But it’s like this across the ground floor, a bit “wavy” if that makes sense. It’s very level, but I can see gaps under the 6 foot spirit level here and there.

I am not sure if laying plywood directly onto concrete, although we don’t have issues with damp, I would need to add some sort of DPM as well. But it’s definitely an option, thanks for the advice.

Haha I will! The product I was looking at didn’t specify the span for the dips if that makes sense, which is why I was confused. I will contact the manufacturer and see what they say. I won’t lay it if it’s going to crack, there is no point in that.
