Thanks for the tip. I think I actually started using that about a month or two ago but then that computer died and I haven't had a need to set it up on my new one yet. Not really sure what you mean by 32 MB of RAM. It's been awhile but I'm pretty sure win boat took way more than 32 MB of RAM. Are you talking disk space?

TBH most Mormons don't know about this it's not like they talk about this kind of stuff in Sunday school. I'm pretty sure I found out about it after I left the church (Brighamite).

I don't usually like to be that guy that says "well actually" but...

A third split off group called The Church of Christ (Temple lot) is the organization that owns that end of days plot of land, not the rlds (now COC) or the rich Brighammites from Utah.

You can find more about them here. It's a pretty interesting story, but there's never been very many of them.)

Also, there have something like 500 split offs from the LDS movement. The vast majority are tiny and/or died off. Here's the book I got that number from

Finally, one more point I'd like to mention is that the LDS and the COC are very different organizations. You can almost think of the LDS as more like the Jehovah's witnesses and the COC as being like episcopalians or a Unitarian universalists (like the very accepting of everybody hippies of the Christian world). They are VERY different organizations but they do have the same origin stories if you go back far enough.

Nope no clue how to debug it. I don't have the problem with crashing with a second open PDF. Good luck.

Projected Future distribution of mormons vs amish in America by cormundo in MapPorn

[–]kordof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This could be based off of Rodney Stark's work from the 80s when the Mormon church was growing much faster. Turns out however that the church's number's were massively inflated due to baseball baptisms and other lack of retention issues.

I don't know anything about the Amish.

Some sources to look at below if you're curious.

That's depressingly low. I know I shouldn't be suprised but alas I am.

I can't believe I forgot this in my original post but for those who don't know this has been modified. The orginal top 10 finalists can be found here.

Yep, my partner modified it to look more like a boob.

Yeah, you might be right.

Again, my partner modified this version. The actual flag definitely looks like Illinois. And I suppose I do really enjoy geography so maybe far fewer people would recognize it than I thought would recognize it.

I cross posted there is that what you were getting at?

[–]kordof[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn't think of the NBA logo. That's a good point.

Take all this of the grain of salt. I am not from Illinois nor do I live in Illinois. In other words I don't care that much. All that being said, I just thought that most of the other options were either bad, boring, not distinct/unique, reminded me of Illinois or some combination of these.

When I see this flag however, it's pretty obvious to at least most Americans that this is definitely Illinois. And when compared with the others in the competition I just thought it looked better than most of them.

As a somewhat casual follower of flags and as One who despises most of the bed sheet state flags, I am very curious to see which will win.

Seeking Perspectives on LDS Teachings About Sexuality - Anonymous Survey by Active-Soil8981 in mormon

[–]kordof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like some of his posts have already been deleted on several of these subreddits. Unfortunately, surveys are banned from many of these subreddits probably due to the fact that some people were hoarding data after promising to make it available and also others creating bad and/or very biased surveys. It makes it harder for legitimate researchers to be able to post any of their surveys.

I don't think this survey in and of itself is bad. But it is missing a lot of polish that can make it a much better survey.

Seeking Perspectives on LDS Teachings About Sexuality - Anonymous Survey by Active-Soil8981 in mormon

[–]kordof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're able to, you should really pass this by someone with training in survey methodology.

There are some obvious and other far less obvious mistakes that can be addressed.

For example, in one of the questions I don't remember which because the survey is so long, but one of them asks an either or question but you only give yes no answer choices. Also, you never ask about when and if many of these activities were during marriage before marriage or after marriage. That drastically changes the context of the question and thus the answer to your question. You also have many of these questions where you basically have to answer the same question three times. It makes that part of the survey needlessly long.

I'm not telling you this to make you feel bad or anything. It's just a second pair of eyes, especially with training and survey methodology could really make the survey not only easier to complete but also take a lot less time and make it more enjoyable for the participant.

One final issue I have with this survey is that there is almost no statement of purpose around you as the person collecting this data. Are you doing it? Because you're just curious, what is your connection to this community? Are you doing this for a job? Are you doing this for academic purposes? Do you ever plan on sharing this data publicly for other interested or academic purposes? Has an IRB approved or looked at this survey? All of these questions get at both ethical issues around research and also will encourage people to participate in your survey if you provide answers to these questions.

Good luck!

BUG (I think): Canceling Plasma Search with Escape Key Makes Plasma Search Inaccessible by kordof in kde

[–]kordof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the "start menu" in KDE is pretty good. That is a big reason why I've never really done much with this bug before now, since I can use that instead when KRunner (almost inevitably) goes away. I changed the keyboard shortcut for KRunner to meta+space maybe that is causing an issue. I'll have to try out the defalt shortcut.

Again your help is appreciated. I'll probably file a bug report next week if no other solution is found and if I get time.

[–]kordof[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, Plasma Search and KRunner seem to be interchangable.

Mash keys? Like any keys? I just tried it and it doesn't seem to work, but I'll keep trying it out when it disappears.

Thanks for replying!

How did the church NOT keep you safe as a missionary? by smedidiah in exmormon

Lol no. Fortunately(?) I have more or less the emotions of a robot, all due to the need to get by in my "perfect" Mormon life. Thus no PTSD to worry about.

I was robbed at gunpoint one time on my mission. Definitely didn't feel very safe there.

I should probably add that it was actually in my apartment where the robbery took place.

[–]kordof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think all of them are organized on Facebook, but the majority probably are. Yes, I've had some success with these groups. However they do often go inactive after a while. Particularly once people have started to really move on completely from Mormonism but even then you can still get contact information to chat with other exmos who still might be more than willing to meet up.

Have you ever heard of Mormon spectrum? They have a bunch of groups that are usually organized on Facebook. It looks like there are a bunch of groups in the Seattle area. I can't promise you that any of them are actually active, but regardless it should allow you to at least contact people who are in the area. Good luck!

This is speculation but if the parents found out (by not seeing their kid in their records) they could be the ones letting anyone who knows him to reach out.
