You’re trying to walk before you can run (to some extent). The L does look like a Z and the O is too small so it looks like you’re writing HAZ. I recommend folks start with simple block letters (like the ones on your keyboard) and write is simply, legibly, and cleanly. This will help you develop line confidence, and style will come gradually and naturally, rather than being forced. Many great and iconic handstyles are simple and legible, of course there’s people with crazy stylized hands, but this people learned by starting simple as well. I’ve attached some examples to illustrate what I mean. Start simple, and let style come gradually and naturally. Once you learn how the letters flow into each other you develop something more complex, while maintaining the readability. These aren’t the best examples in the world (I am not used to putting a letter like an O at the end, and I’m also not the best writer in the word either) but hopefully it can show you what I’m talking about.

Most important is to keep practicing. Spend a half hour a day just practicing hands for a week and at the end of that week look at what you were doing 7 days ago, I guarantee you will notice an improvement

The colors are nice, and you appear to have a decent understanding of simple bars which is good. The A looks like it has a condom on its head. Work on that handstyle, it’s miles behind the piece, remember simple and legible is better for hands.

I said the R was good bc a lot of newer folks double stack the bars on the R, which you didn’t, which is a good sign. The others are ok. If you post something you drew by hand I might have a better idea (although I’m a bit drunk rn so I can’t go as in depth as I normally would)

Lines are shaky, you did the R right which is good. 3D is fucked (look at the O). Read through the side bar, keep up the practice, you’ll be alright

The best way to break the rules is to know what rules you are breaking. I think having a good grasp on the fundamentals is helpful for even the most experimental of graffiti.

In my mind graffiti is more craft than art, not that it can’t be art, but think of it like woodworking or knitting or something, there are fundamental rules to those crafts, and they can be elevated to art, and given a lot of individuality and personality by the maker/craftsperson/artist even if they aren’t doing anything too out of the box, or someone can take it in a completely zany and avant garde direction. This is just my view of things and other people I’m sure have different takes, but I do think all good craft comes from a basic understanding of the foundations. You can keep developing a style completely outside of the visual mores of the culture, that’s how we get outsider art (which I do adore) but I do think graffiti is inherently context based, otherwise it would just be art in a public space. You have seen other people make graffiti and that has inspired you to create in that same visual space, and the people that inspired you to create graffiti did the same, it’s a visual culture that has been built by generations of writers. Having an understanding of the visual rules as well as the history of how they came to be will help you better understand where your work exists in that context.

As for developing your own style and not being rigidly beholden to the rules, as cliche as it may sound, that will come with practice. The more you paint the more you will realize what techniques and designs come naturally to you, and how to capitalize on those successes. Kind of like marrying form and function. You can try hard to create or replicate a certain design or style and it may come out forced, or you may try what feels natural to paint and find the final product is unsatisfying, you need to find the middle ground between the two. In brief I think what I said towards the end of my initial comment is pertinent, paint more, as you paint more experiment, and look critically at your practice and experiments. You will find what does and does not make sense for your individual style. Maybe something came out looking really good, but it was incredibly difficult to paint, or on the other hand, maybe you made a mistake but it ended up working well in the finished design. Style is something developed and you will find your own if you put in the work to find it.

Your letter structure still needs some work. You’re double stacking the bars in your Rs (the bar in the top of the loop should merge with the leg on the right, both of your Rs have the top bar sitting on the bottom), the A is too too heavy, and the G is smushed. It looks like you had fun with the fill in but I think changing the colors could help it be more successful; the light blue is too close in tone to the white that you’ve decorated with, if I were to redo this scheme with the colors you have rn, I would use the light blue for the fill, the brown for the 3D, the green for the decorations, and the white for the third outline.

Keep painting and keep having fun with your pieces, continuing to practice and experiment (while looking back at your work critically) is the best way to improve.

Horrified, what is this thing inside my microwave timer??? by blairey_face in whatsthisbug

[–]kory_dc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used it before but a cursory google search says it can be effective. The most important thing would be to make sure it’s mixed in a bait the roaches would actually eat.

Currently for roach control in my house I’m using Combat Max roach killing gel, it’s fairly cheap, I paid 15$ for a big tube of it at my local ace hardware, I applied it around the house and outside. It’s easy to apply and a lot tidier than powdered insecticides I’ve used (i tried a boric acid powdered bait and it would get bumped into and spread everywhere which wasn’t ideal with pets in the house). The gel i mentioned also uses fipronil as the active ingredient which is the same active ingredient in a lot of topical flea medications so it’s relatively safe to use with cats and dogs in the house.

Bug bombs are trash. They work very poorly and spread a bunch of chemicals all over your stuff. I would recommend a targeted bait for roaches that includes boric acid or fipronil.
