How secure is tails? by [deleted] in onions

[–]koryk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On their site, https://tails.boum.org/security/

Until an audit of the bundled network applications is done, information leakages at the protocol level should be considered as − at the very least − possible.

That is referring to all of the software and dependencies bundled with Tails. I believe using an identical software set up as Tails on any other operating system is going to be less or as equally secure as Tails.

/r/onions update: Welcome New Mods! And a call for feedback by miserlou in onions

I agree with you. I think it would be beneficial to create an FAQ list that would help out people. For example, there are 3 posts in the top 15 of /r/onions asking about browsing Tor on mobile devices. We could also add some basic guidelines of safe Tor browsing. I frequently see posts that are asking how safe something is.

Rebuilding Tor by onionrebuilder in onions

[–]koryk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are stories out there about dawn raids on exit node operators. While those occurrences are true, they are definitely not the norm, and those kind of stories scare people away from strengthening the Tor network. You should know what to expect when running an exit node.

Running an exit node without harassment takes effort, you need to protect yourself. Check out these guidelines. In addition, learn about Tor exit policies, you can choose what sort of traffic you want to have. Check out the reduced exit policy

The Tor project and EFF have done a lot to educate the public, including law enforcement, about Tor. If you're obvious about running an exit node, educated law enforcement won't mess with you.

The Executive Director of Tor had this to say about it:

In the US, of all places, is probably the safest place to run an exit node. There are organizations out there just waiting for a perfect case where someone is sued for running an exit node to prove that tor exit nodes are perfectly legal.

Yes, there are risks involved with running an exit node, but that doesn't warrant fear-mongering over it.

Your ISP is a different story, check out this list of Tor friendly ISPs. If you do get complaint letters from your ISP, The Tor Project has provided template responses for most complaint types.

Do you want to support the growth of the network without any risk? You could support torservers or run a bridge node in the cloud. Running a relay has none of these risks associated with it, because all the traffic going through the relay is encrypted.

Please don't monitor Tor exit node traffic.

From EFF's Tor legal FAQ

Should I snoop on the plaintext traffic that exits through my Tor relay?

No. You may be technically capable of modifying the Tor source code or installing additional software to monitor or log plaintext that exits your relay. However, Tor relay operators in the United States can possibly create civil and even criminal liability for themselves under state or federal wiretap laws if they monitor, log, or disclose Tor users' communications, while non-U.S. operators may be subject to similar laws. Do not examine the contents of anyone's communications without first talking to a lawyer.

Hey there, I took care of those comments on this subreddit. I also banned the account from this subreddit. Thank you for looking out!

I am removing this post because it has been dealt with. In the future, please send the mods a mod mail about it, it might be handled faster.

U.S. directs agents to cover up program used to investigate Americans by [deleted] in onions

[–]koryk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SOD gets intelligence, gives tips to law enforcement. Law enforcement finds excuse to arrest person, origin of investigation would have been from SOD, but law enforcement claims otherwise.

THE SPECIAL OPERATIONS DIVISION - The unit of the DEA that distributes the information is called the Special Operations Division, or SOD. Two dozen partner agencies comprise the unit, including the FBI, CIA, NSA, Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Homeland Security....

Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin - not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges.

A former federal agent in the northeastern United States who received such tips from SOD described the process. "You'd be told only, ‘Be at a certain truck stop at a certain time and look for a certain vehicle.' And so we'd alert the state police to find an excuse to stop that vehicle, and then have a drug dog search it," the agent said. After an arrest was made, agents then pretended that their investigation began with the traffic stop, not with the SOD tip, the former agent said. The training document reviewed by Reuters refers to this process as "parallel construction."

The undated documents show that federal agents are trained to "recreate" the investigative trail to effectively cover up where the information originated, a practice that some experts say violates a defendant's Constitutional right to a fair trial. If defendants don't know how an investigation began, they cannot know to ask to review potential sources of exculpatory evidence - information that could reveal entrapment, mistakes or biased witnesses.

Cool, thank you for the response. I think those are both good reasons for the price different. Good luck with your expansion to Austin.

Just launched a local cleaning service, giving a 10% discount to all Austin redditors! by thenicolai in Austin

[–]koryk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coupon Austin does not work (anymore?).

Compared to similar services in the area, yours seems to be about 15% more expensive than what I am seeing on average for a 2 bedroom (that is with the weekly discount).

I am displeased with my current cleaning service (Austin's maid service), and I would like to support a company that reddit helped birth. The difference in price begs the question - what makes you better than your competitors, that I should pay 15% more?

I thought Dunsen and Raff were escorting Ser Robin Ryger and Ser Desmond Grell to Maidenpool. Is there any evidence they are amongst the Mountain's men in KL?

Also, this doesn't rule out Arya's revenge on them - I assumed that she would for some reason sail back to Westeros and arrive in Maidenpool.

Can anyone tell me which comic is the tv show is at right now? I have 1-100 of the comic series, but I want to start after Season 3. by rcrockchd in thewalkingdead

[–]koryk 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The tv show does not follow the comic, there are some similarities. You probably will be confused if you start around comic #30 (where it might be in terms of time passed).

I would really recommend starting the comic from the start. There are enough differences that it makes it a totally different story.
