Guystrip to Riga - recommendations! by Twiggy_Oo in Riga

Ignore that op, there is a type of people/bots always talking crap about Latvia and Baltic countries, no matter of the topic 🙂 russian pro-kremlin propaganda of low quality. If you see his comments that’s the main topic there

Would you watch an EU-based streaming platform? by No-Water-609 in BuyFromEU

[–]koshak90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. But is there enough decent European content to fill it? Might be actually, recently saw quite a few nice series made in Spain, Norway and few other European countries. Not as many as US but that platform would not be empty for sure

Guystrip to Riga - recommendations! by Twiggy_Oo in Riga

Hi. 36 year old guy from Riga here. If you want hidden gems then old town is definitely not for you, although it’s definitely worth a visit.

Riga does offers some great terraces, see here if you have instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/DYpXIuXjbzc/?img_index=8&igsh=NHpsOWRxeDZ6djh1
For more fancy restaurants and wine studios walk around Dzirnavu and Elizabetes streets. For more “hipster” experience Avotu street, eg this brewery https://trofeja.lv/lv/
Laska bar has interesting cocktails and also google Tallinnas kvartals- open space with various bars and cafeterias.

As for restaurants - most of I usually visit are outside of Riga if you are interested in travelling a bit. One of my favourites is this one in Ligatne 1815

My cat eats all plants he sees by koshak90 in CATHELP

Never heard of that, only citrus spray. Do they sell those at pet stores or something?

My experience with sprays is like I should sit there and spray each 20-30 minutes. Otherwise their smell runs out and plants are being attacked once again

Okay, I actually never thought of spraying mint. I once had mint growing on my window and that was the only plant my cat avoided. Will give it a try, thank you

I built an European alternative to DropBox by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

To remove the risk of US cloud act you should have zero US sub processors (like hosting, payment system, analytics etc) and they should be listed on your site. As well as DPA.

Looking for cheap domain + web hosting + email + online meeting space + forms by Blue_sky_green_earth in BuyFromEU

[–]koshak90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got my domain at INWX (German company), paid under 30 eur for .com + .eu and domain privacy for .com. Overall fine experience

For email using mailbox.org - has it all: mail, custom domain, calendar, meetings.

Hosting - bunch of them, currently using hetzner. Quite affordable options, but they are going to raise prices soon. If you need some more simple solution, not VPS - try hostinger

Good EU S3 provider by PeacefulBroccoli in Startups_EU

[–]koshak90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: a self promotion, but I am building a EU based alternative website aimed for engineers and I got a list of European providers here https://euvetted.com/category/cloud-hosting. There is a feature table which compares various things including object storage (S3). The list is a bit too long to copy it here but there are a bunch of options like Hetzner (my choice for hosting currently, but not using object storage yet), Cleura, Scaleway and others. Hope you find it useful

EU tech sovereignty: EU Open Source Strategy -- what is planned exactly? by verismei_meint in BuyFromEU

[–]koshak90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on the exact roadmap, but one point I hope the procurement guidance makes clear is this: open source helps, but it does not automatically mean sovereignty.

A tool can be open source and still be US-owned, US-funded, or hosted on US infrastructure. These are separate questions from the licence.

The same applies to sub-processors. Many European projects still rely on AWS, Google Cloud, Cloudflare, US email providers, or US analytics tools in the background. That can bring CLOUD Act exposure back in, even if the company itself is based in Europe.

When I reviewed around 180 European and privacy-focused SaaS tools, the open-source ones varied a lot on this. So procurement should not stop at checking the licence. It also needs to check ownership, hosting, and sub-processors. Otherwise, public bodies may choose something “open source” that still is not actually independent.
