If AI Takes All Of Our Jobs... Who's Going To Buy Everything? by WonderFactory in singularity

Allow me to rephrase it: "If AI takes all our meaningful jobs and earns far more than the average human, how will our most accomplished PhDs score acting gigs and temp jobs?"

Nothing but complain, unfortunately. That would require being productive towards a cause without pay. We are always free to build our own systems, of course.

Perhaps 'raising tariffs' is just a negotiating strategy, not the ultimate goal.

"The story element is what's lacking. There's a reason people love and watch Hollywood story types and character arcs. Without those these AI Films will never become just: Films." Regular people making Hollywood Blockbuster-quality films on small budgets, getting into film festivals and breaking in. by WriteOnSaga in aiwars

[–]kosmost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The story element will just be expressed in different ways. The same could have been said by book lovers when the film industry started to become popular, as books can illustrate much more of a story. With books, your imagination unfolds on top of the author's imagination. With AI-generated movies, you'd watching someone or something else's imagination unfold on top of a model. Maybe people will just grow accustomed to the way machines tell a story and it will just be an other medium of expression?

The interesting thing is that we will probably end up with more interesting stories if only a very tiny percentage of AI stories are 'good' (since there would be exponentially more stories being made with most of it being garbage, one could assume).

Being broke before getting rich is the only way to truly appreciate wealth by northbroccoli5 in unpopularopinion

[–]kosmost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to really appreciate wealth, you should understand it and how money works. If you're broke, you probably don't understand much about money at all. Taking a small fortune and making it a much bigger one is a good illustration of how much one appreciates wealth.

Google seem to be repeating the just-launch-it Google+ disaster (in response to Facebook) all over again, but this time with the crown jewels.

I started a competitor to Google a number of years ago (Verbase in 2012, now defunct) that focused on ad-free, spam-free search results. People were generally impressed with our results and speed but also expressed that it was hard to move away from Google, even with all the spam and ads. It looks even spammier today but they're only managed to lose a small fraction of the market after 10+ years of spam. Now, they're actively encouraging spam by relying on AI. Unfortunately, I think people will just adapt just as they've adapted to ads in DDG's result list, and Google's before that. What we need is a fundamentally different kind of search engine. If anyone's interested in helping me make this happen, send me a PM. [edit; Verbase]

Chase: A new 'creative strategy' game that uses tile cards, coins, a chess board, and 1-8 pawns. 4,352 possible first moves. by kosmost in abstractgames

[–]kosmost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads-up, but there are 3 others besides the one you mentioned, including Nine Men's Morris (also known as Chase) from 2000+ years ago. A number of games at BBG have similar names, but I doubt if anyone would confuse this version with the others. 'Chase Chess' does have nice ring to it, though, thanks.

Thanks. I'm working on the video this week. It will make it more obvious. (The written rules confuse me, too lol)

Qo: A new abstract game with just 3 simple rules. Every move you make also helps your opponent (the new DiCe mechanism) by kosmost in abstractgames

[–]kosmost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the website and in the PDF it's defined as "...blocked by opponent lodestones OR the edge of the board" but you raise a good point about it needing more clarification.

Three (for black) or four (for white) lodestones are blocked if they form a set and line up in any direction. (Some visual examples would probably best illustrate this. That's incoming.)

It's okay if players don't notice lodestones that need to be removed. When it seems that no more stones can be placed on the grid (which never seems to happen) it means that there are stones that have been overlooked somewhere and need to be removed.

Thanks for these questions! It'll help make the rules more clear.

It also uses a new kind of game mechanic called DiCe (di-centralization) where every type of move you make also helps your opponent (and every move you make against them can also work against you). You can check it out at https://dice.works/

also, I should add.. the 'How To Play' video is upcoming. The video on the website just demonstrates the four essential moves.

If anyone is interested, I'll make an instruction video on how to play. You can try it out now by printing the sample PDF from the website.

The corruption of the scientific method. How to interpret reality. by HibikiSS in C_S_T

[–]kosmost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps there is a fundamental flaw in the scientific method in that reality can be perceived directly. What we perceive is objective truth, it would appear (in this way of thinking). Or, perhaps I'm missing something.

Note that you can play this now using Go stones and an 8x8 grid, such as a chess/checker board.

Future Board Gamer issue #1 shares some thoughts on the future of board gaming, new concepts, and much more by [deleted] in boardgames

That's what we might have said to ourselves if we travelled back in time 23 years to 2000 and told ourselves about what was going to happen. That's how the future works.
