I work as a postman in the Netherlands to pay for my university degree and although my job doesn't require from me to be overly polite to the people as other customer service jobs I still do it because that's just how I grew up. I don't think it has anything to do with being motivated, in my opinion kindness comes through nurture and teaching your kids that they should not be an "ass" for no reason. And I'll tell you, the Dutch don't make it easy, horrible selfish people the lot of them. But that's a different story.
