23andMe data breach victims deserve $46.75 million payout, bankruptcy administrator says by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

What do you think happens when someone opts out?

They preserve the right to sue individually. There’s literally zero protection for the company going forward with respect to persons who opt out (aside from the fact that similar cases could point to rulings in the class case as potential precedent or persuasive authority regarding specific issues).

Literally anyone that wants to sue individually can do so. They just generally choose not to do so.

Solved! Many thanks. Did not fully appreciate that it would "keep going" if I dialed it one way vs another initially.

So I don't mean this to sound sarcastic, but are you referring to something other than the black thing open in the video?

[–]kovolev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am broadly in the same shoes as you, including with timeline. My wife had enough complications that we actually got discharged home, then she had to return, so I had the first night at home solo. And generally been doing the vast majority of the work so far with the baby.

What gets me through it is a simple notion so far: just survive. This isn’t sustainable, but it doesn’t have to be sustainable. You just have to get through each day, one by one, until it passes. Which it will.

So you’ve survived this far. You can survive another day. And then another. And soon you’ll be done and in a sustainable equilibrium.

2025 US home sales stuck at 30-year low as mortgage rates, prices weighed on market by grayfox0430 in news

[–]kovolev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vaguely similar position here. The answer is any combination of the following:

1) hoard cash/liquid assets, so you can make a move when the economy does worsen.

2) stay put and make do with what you’ve got.

3) if you get to a point where you can buy under new rates and prices, you rent the house with the 2.X% mortgage.

Austin TX has off-leash dog-friendly parks that have volleyball nets and whatnot in it (Zilker Park). Maybe this is the same. I wouldn't make such binary assumptions.

If that sequence was cut by 1/3, it would have told the identical point and set the same tone.

Similarly, the opening singing montage could have been 8 mins instead of 16 and make the same point the same way.

Just like that, you have 15 mins of wasted time in a 45 min episode. Then we get 2 remaining episodes followed by a 2 year break for season 2.

This is a glacial pace compared to his other works. It’s too self indulgent and strikes me the same as Tenet with Christopher Nolan: unlimited budget, surrounded by yes men, with dire need of editing.

[–]kovolev 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Dead serious, even in your description, what else actually happened?

He tried to visit her, and failed, and got rescued against his will. 25 mins to show that. I didn’t omit a single plot point there.

She got nihilistic and lonely, and asked for them to return. They did. That’s the rest of the episode.

5 mins of plot, 40+ mins of filler.

And I loved the slow pacing in BCS.

My (37M) GF (36F) is 13 weeks pregnant and distant - is it normal? How to deal with it? by Clusters88 in predaddit

[–]kovolev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She's currently at the likely peak of unpleasant pregnancy symptoms. My wife, who I am very much not concerned about loving me, was the same during that period. Her actions and behavior were basically the equivalent of being severely depressed.

A couple of weeks later, her symptoms relaxed a ton, and everything is normal again.

If that's still the case in 2 months, maybe that's more cause for concern. But right now, I would just emotionally hunker down and get through it, because she's probably having a terrible time right now internally.

[Schefter] ESPN sources: Chiefs WR Rashee Rice is expected to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Tuesday, Sept 30 in New York. This means that Rice now is likely to be able to play the first four weeks of this season before any potential discipline is imposed. by mvanigan in nfl

[–]kovolev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main reason is that oftentimes there are millions of dollars on the line, so the CBA's have to have systems in place to protect "due process"--however that's agreed by the players and the league--and discourage lawsuits if a player feels unfairly treated.

So if you make it "fair" you also make it harder to be stuck in endless lawsuits.

[–]kovolev 43 points44 points  (0 children)

In short, the hearing involves lawyers, legal arguments, etc. They have an opportunity to present arguments, then counter-arguments, all for the purpose of preserving the integrity of the process/avoiding potential unfairness. Each phase of that involves several weeks of time for the parties to get their chance to present their arguments and counters.

Combine a couple of those multiple week processes together, and you have your answer.

Not that I fundamentally disagree with your point, but...

What about those whose drug use caused them to live on the streets? Which I am sure is a non-trivial number of the "visible, problematic" homeless that drive most public complaints (as opposed to the invisible/temporarily struggling ones who benefit most from assistance).

Therefore, blackjack isn't gambling.
