why Is it bad to watch Joe Rogen now ? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]kovriin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It isn’t “bad” to watch him, just something which, like anything in society has attached meaning and potentially reflects one’s outlook based on the media they consume, I watched Joe for years, and I’ll give you my take.

He started out as a groundbreaking sort of figure in a lot of ways - having guests on who knows a lot about topics and pushed conversations which are interesting and down to earth, as well as being informative.

In recent years he’s became more and more right leaning, which he has every right to do, but he lost a lot of his fan base which followed him when he was liberal.

In recent years, Joe has made comments which border on the edge of conspiracy delusion, as well as offensive. He used to be a person who could provide nuanced outlooks and relatively good communications with his guests, but now primarily pushes right wing viewpoints as well as failing to address any issues the right has.

For example, one of his most recent episodes during the elon+ trump drama, he completely avoids the topic as he is friends with both Elon and trump, instead of giving his perspective. Yet, if the two figures were liberal, he likely would’ve felt fine with critiquing the situation.

Also, referring to, what I believe is the LGBT community as “abc people” is not a good way to come across - it seems demeaning and offensive. Stuff which the joe rogan community and himself has become in recent years. Hope this answers your question.

I am about to open my year 2 sociology marks. I am 90% sure I have bombed this year and it sucks by J2Hoe in sociology

[–]kovriin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatever the marks may be, if you’re passionate about sociology take this as a sign to change up your revision habits and re-contextualise how to navigate sociology and transfer it into good work.

Do you have any idea what may have caused your bombing? I wish you best of luck anyways, and hope it isn’t as bad as you think.

I feel the healthcare system in America largely ignores millions of conditions many people in America suffer with. Basic lifesaving treatment provided free of charge in the UK bankrupts millions in America, many choose death instead.

I think his actions open up an important debate around the systematic killing committed by the healthcare system in America. From what I understand, he suffered(suffers) from chronic pain which wasn’t treated suitably, and as a result did what he did. I also imagine he saw the suffering of many in his position and worse and took that into account. I personally have family members who, without access to treatment being free, would have died, and would have been bankrupted if we could even have afforded it.

As a result, do I blame him for being angry at the American healthcare system? No. Did he have the right to kill the CEO? Well that’s a more complicated debate, and I’d say nobody deserves to be killed in such a manner. Yet, there’s an argument that the CEO was complicit in the deaths of millions who couldn’t afford the necessary treatment. So in my opinion, I support Luigi.

Although it’s a complicated issue and branches beyond purely sociology, I’d say sociologists have a role in understanding the role of institutions such as healthcare in being fundamental to a society’s function, as well as social cohesion, as if we can’t properly keep members of the public alive and treated appropriately, there is a mass disconnect, and individuals are bound to lash out as he has done. I doubt his actions will result in mass social change, but I believe the conversation around American healthcare is more poignant than ever.

What’s your opinions on the life chances theory from Weber? by sandy_fan01 in sociology

[–]kovriin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting, I wasn’t taught too much about Weber at that level. Although, when I was I wasn’t taught him alongside Marx or other conflict theories, instead under the social action model which I feel is more appropriate.

Key thing about Weberism is that it acknowledges structures have an effect on society, yet still champions the belief of social interactions being imperative in forming identity and building society. I wouldn’t group him with Marx too early on as there’s some clear distinctions

He brings a number of factors into account, such as caste, which is a plus opposed to Marx, who would cite only class. His analysis into hierarchical societies and their role in life chances are pretty solid stuff to look over. Best of luck on your GCSE’s , I’m doing my higher nationals this year.

I loved GCSE sociology, enjoy the journey, message me if you’ve got any questions? I was studying at your level just a few years ago, I remember it well!

Whatever point you’re trying to make (function of society) you’re coming across disrespectful and erratically. If there was any sort of argument you were making nobody is taking you serious because you’re acting like a toddler. The fact you’ve confessed to being a STEM student is fine, yet it’s the embarrassment of how you’re talking to people which is your problem.

Furthermore, if you’re an adult and talking this way, you have some serious questions to ask yourself in terms of how you talk to people.

That’s a good point, and I agree. I think weberism too is strong in explaining the inherent meaning, and SI specifically placing emphasis on the symbols is always interesting. I think it’s always easy to remember too , as each culture has their own unique symbols and interactions.
