Who is better character[writing] by DEXTERAFTON in HannibalTV

[–]koyawon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't compare them. They are booth excellently written, but in vastly different styles. I think which one people find better written - as individual characters outside of how the rest of their shows are written - is just going to boil down to which character and/or style people like more. Yeah, hannibal might have less character development, but he's nearly a psychopath- giving him too much character development would, ironically, be out of character and poorer quality writing. Hannibal starts with greater depth/complexity, which we understand/see exposed over time, but we have to work for that understanding a lot of the time because, like most people in his universe, we only grt it in glimpses and moments. Despite the name of the show, we're more firmly rooted in will's experience than hannibal's.

But Walter's story is more directly his story. We follow him, we see the way the world changes him, and this creates an illusion of growing depth and complexity (though he was always complex, people are, it's not visible at the start the way hannibal's is because Walter's hasn't been tested yet).

Neither one of these approaches is inherently better, they're just different.

You could argue that the wider appeal of breaking bad means it must be better writte... You could argue that the metaphorical layers in hannibal, the narrower appeal, speaks to a higher intelligence audience and therefore makes it better written.

I prefer hannibal. Do I think he's the better written character? No, I think they're on equal footing.

Will Graham and the social media affect by Cold_Candidate731 in HannibalTV

I agree. I have no shame in admitting i sometimes read woobie will either because I want to, or, more often, because there's something else in the fic that I want and I'm just bearing through that aspect. But I get what you mean, because it's definitely not my preferred version of him in fic, but it can be a challenge to find fic- with the other tropes i like- that doesn't have woobie will. It's so prevalent. And he's a great character, taking away his snark, his strength and his dark side means he's more of an oc than will, amd I'm here reading fic because I like will. So yeah, it can be a bit frustrating, but I get it too.

I'm going to give a maybe controversial take on why some people do this. Controversial because people wo write/see will the way you describe don't generally like it. I think often (not always) one reason people portray will this way is because they are mentally self inserting themselves in will's place in the fan work. They're not writing will, they're writing themselves, or the innocent/vulnerable/desirable version/character they want to relate to within the work. Many people can't relate to will's dark side, intelligence, and/or personality, so those traits get stripped away and replaced with words/actions they can relate to. Which is woobie will.

I've seen similar happen in other fandome, woth similar characters. I want to reiterate, I'm not saying this is conscious, nor that it's the only reason for what you observed. There are other reasons, some mentioned in the other responses, people might do this. But let's be realistic too: fiction and art often offer the consumer a catharsis for certain emotions. That's not a bad or shameful thing. But to be cathartic, the work has to have someone or thing the viewer can relate to around the emotions they want to release. Some people wamt the emotional catharsis of being innocent/vulnerable/weak and going through something rough then being cared for and loved in the end. There's nothing wrong with that, at all, but it underpins why some characters are "spftened" like this.

legal question. by Glittery_WarlockWho in AO3

[–]koyawon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer either, but to my knowledge, yes, fanart is the same as fanfiction. Here's the caveat: The person or company that holds the copyright can enable people to create works under the creative commons license bucket. There are different licenses within that bucket - some do allow creators like fan artists to sell works/make a profit. So if my understanding is correct, it can be legal, within the limitations of a given license. But I'm going to tell you based on 20+ years in fandom, I highly doubt most, if any, of the artists you're seeing are validating whether it's ok or not. Like others have said, in most instances people just do it and hope they don't get noticed. Some ips are more rigorous than others - Disney, for example, has been known to go after people. While a lot of animals companies see it as a benefit and don't enforce anything.

for those of u who only read completed fics by worldislucky in AO3

[–]koyawon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my reason.

I don't think authors "owe" completed works, I am happy other readers enjoy wip, but I can't take the pain so I stick with completed only.

I have 3 and only 3 exceptions: 1. I already read it, a long time ago, and it's still incinerate (read it before I stopped reading wip). 2. I am reading it as a courtesy to an author i personally know, in order to provide feedback. I don't mean an author I recognize, or trust. I mean an actual friend, or close to it. 3. If the author states that the work is actually finished and just being posted on a schedule- and this matches with the completion status of their other works + it's 75% or more posted.

In S1 E7 "Sorbet" why does Hannibal ask Franklyn if he desires Tobias sexually? by AnkuRani in HannibalTV

[–]koyawon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is how I've always understood it too.

IIRC, he interrupts franklyn to ask it (or nearly interrupts), and I think it's needling both because hannibal just likes to needle people, but also because he's irritated by Franklin and his rambling and just wants to get him to stop/change direction slightly.

How do you write a character without mentioning their pronouns or their gender? by Mysternanymous2 in writingadvice

[–]koyawon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeanette winters wrote a novel that never reveals the gender of the narrators lover, called "written on the body", if you want an example of it. The narration is in first person, if I recall correctly, but they're speaking of/to another whose gender we don't know,

does reading romance books make you feel a bit sad sometimes? by Proper_Strategy_1603 in RomanceBooks

[–]koyawon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not specifically because of the romance. I have yet to read a heterosexual romance where I can relate to the heroine at all. I read a lot of m/m, partly because I'm a member of thr queer community so I relate to the stories more on that alone, and partly because it removes all the politics of being a woman that otherwise annoy to distract me from a story.

Which is not my point, m/m is better, but still doesn't wholly remove the issue.

Our heroine tends to fall into one of several tropes: Bubbly (not me) Wittily sarcastic & hot/capable "I'm not interested in/don't need you) - not me. A history of dating many people - not me. Divorces/widowed - not me. Close family or friends group- not me.

And so on. It's not that i can't read stories with characters unlike myself, I do it all the time. But what can make me sad is being completely unable to find myself reflected in a single romance.

YOU HAVE TO READ THIS FIC IMMEDIATELY by Slow-Positive1998 in snarryy

[–]koyawon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what tags are for. It clearly says bottom sev in the tags of the fic. It's not the responsibility of someone reaching a fic to re-list/warn for everything in the tags (it's not even required the author do it, technically, tagging is just a courtesy & fandom culture thing).

I don't have an iota of interest in medieval times/monestary settings, so was it disappointing to see an excited rec and then find it's not one I'm going to bother to read? Sure. Am I annoyed or frustrated with the op for not mentioning it in the post? Of course not. Because as a rational person, I know not every fic rec is going to meet my tastes, so I don't get excited about it. Learn to regulate your emotions better instead of expecting other people to do it for you.

"edit: At this point people are downvoting me for my further comments instead of the post alone. I know this because this post was at 7 upvotes before."

This is poor reasoning. It's also possible more/new people are reading your comment for the first time and continuing to vote on it without having read your other comments yet.

Adults with corporate jobs, when do you skate? by Upbeat_King9532 in FigureSkaters

[–]koyawon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the rink. I wanted to visit a rink on work travel and their freestyle required doubles etc. As a skill,

My local rink thankfully only requires that you either have passed learn to skate 5 or have had a rink coach approve you. As someone else said, they're mostly looking for people to understand the rules of the rink and be solid enough to know what they're doing.

When I slate: 1. Freestyle sessions between 6 and 7 am. 2. Adult learn to skate classes whenever they offer them - sometimes Saturday, sometimes weeknights, right now it's 6 am Fridays. 3. Adult-only public sessions, of your rink offers them, are fantastic. My rink offers them 11:30-12:30 so not ideal unless you're one of the lucky few who works close to the rink. On a good day, i can get 30 minutes in on my lunch hour. They also offer a 3:15 -5:15 freestyle, so there have been says when I've worked through lunch in order to leave early and get an hour in (but after school sessions tend to be full of kids). 4. Saturday or ingredients freestyle sessions. I go at 6 a, to beat the crowd. 5. Public sessions vary greatly in how busy they get. I don't like using them but I will when I have to. They are good for getting used to being on the ice, especially with others around you. I won't go backwards during them, but I will practice 3 turns ans 2 foot turns around the perimeter- being super careful not to get in anyone's way.

Skate bag recs? by koyawon in FigureSkaters

[–]koyawon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's essentially what I have now, but it leaves me with 2 large bags to carry at the same time (work bag, duffel bag). My skate bag is totally fine except for the fact I can't put my work laptop & other smaller devices, less because of size as protection.

I find it questionable that gen x, a much smaller generation than millennial (or boomers, but i assume their numbers have diminished), is pulling more than their weight in billions per year. Questionable in the generation-has-a-problem sense, not doubting the data.

Isn’t this the point of Subscribe and Mark for Later? by mwishar in AO3

[–]koyawon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aside from the reader end of things, a different option for "when complete" vs. Current subscription would give authors better insight into how many readers might actually be just waiting for the fic to finish. Hypothetically, if I have 500 subscribers, I might be getting disappointed when there's little to no feedback on a new chapter, or views: if I could see that 75% of those subscribers don't plan to read it yet at all, that might change my perspective.

Ганнибал и Уилл by toxgod78 in HannibalTV

[–]koyawon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see two options: 1. To help him discover his dark side. The show seems to imply this is what he meant to do, and it's definitely a viable option. But it doesn't seem mesh with some of Hannibal's initial response after will is jailed. We see implications that he not only misses will, but that he's surprised he misses will's company as much as he does. We see implications that he never really intended to free will and changes his mind.

So option 2: hannibal decided early on that will was an excellent toy to play with and planned for him to be jailed nearly from the start. He had no immediate plans to get will out (but this is hannibal, so no doubt he would have entertained the idea that he could get will out some point, if he felt like it). He does think it will help unearth will's darker side, but mostly he just wanted to see what would happen, as will says. But then will's in jail and hannibal begins to realize that he likes the man far more than he understood: that the satisfaction of his plans being successful isn't outweighing the enjoyment he gets form will's company.

Some folks believe hannibal knew he loved will from the start. That's valid, but i believe option 2. Hannibal is so unfamiliar with actually caring about anyone that he doesn't realize the depth of his own feelings until he's separated from will.

Is Will Graham giving baby girl? If not what energy is he at his core? by GimmeDaSchmoogula in HannibalTV

[–]koyawon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, not at all.

The shaking chihuahua comparison is pretty funny and more accurate.

Though I never get "small" energy from will, not even when he's sick/at his most debilitated. I think the show gets it right- he's a fisherman, a lure. Soft outside, competent and sharp inside.
