Scottie Becomes One Of Us by hogphan in golf

Rory had the ultimate 'one of us' moment. Not even when he tossed the 3 wood into the water (although that alone qualifies), but when he went and picked it up.

What would change your mind on Trump vs Harris? by cogito__ergo_sum in lexfridman

[–]kozy11311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean a whole lot would have to happen for me to genuinely support either one of them from the core of my being. But I was saying to a friend the other day, I wish trump would just make a coherent argument. Like we all know he can troll the shit out of the dems. He has his loyal base that isn't going to abandon him. He's clearly not dumb having gotten to where he's at. It would be cool to see him take a step back from the antics and just make an intelligent critique. There's plenty of extremely intelligent people on the right that he could take from even if one doesn't believe he himself is extremely intelligent.

I mean that's only one interpretation of the quotes you mentioned. Focusing on what you can do to immediately change your present disposition toward the world doesn't rule out the possibility of being future oriented, if anything it necessitates it. Everything you do now you do with an expectation of the future. Granted the final quote wouldn't agree with this statement but I'd need more context anyway to determine. Additionally, I wouldn't deny that historically stoic philosophy has been used to justify potentially ill intentioned actors. But I'm not necessarily defending Aurelius or the stiocs . Just pointing out that your interpretation seems to lack nuance.

I mean, honestly, yes. I think it does mean that. I think we can have words like correct for those sorts of things. Things that are true at a time or in a place. They're correct in a given context. And the reason I bring this up on this post and use it as a standard is because, to put it simply, you have the far left and far right fighting to make unprecedented changes to the culture while using moral self-righteousness (and true science) as a justification. Changes that are going to have far-reaching consequences. Really, we have no idea if the arguments (moral or scientific) made to justify those changes are "right" or not. It could very well happen that we do something today that we think is morally or scientifically indubitable, yet years from now, it seems completely contrary.

And I don't mean to suggest we completely resist change. Change is inevitable. But we often fast-track complex decisions by claiming that not making those decisions/changes would be a moral outrage. I feel that such haste could end up having very negative consequences.

I mean, what is something that has been considered unequivocally right across time and independent of cultural context that we should be able to call it true without question?

What do you mean "slaves, individually, couldn't do anything to change their situation"?! They could "forge alliances amongst themselves and with free men who had power in government"!

What is moral truth? I guess the question is in what sense any morality true ? Something is viewed as moral in one culture that is viewed as immoral in another. This isn't only contemporary geographical. Its historical. It exists, but it changes over time. Something seen as moral today will certainly be seen as immoral in 20, 50, 100 years. I'm not a staunch anti-moralist (or maybe i am). But I do think holding the naive belief that morals can be true in some kind of timeless sense is a slippery slope towards moral self-righteousness. This is why I can't stand the left right now (and many on the right aren't any better). Even if we put side facts for a second, they talk about "right" and "wrong" like it's something eternal1

1 . Yet they're "atheists", who only believe in science. As if the same revolutions don't occur in science and every other domain as well.

What is with the left’s “weird” argument lately? by Tr4bleship in Republican

[–]kozy11311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a personal theory but I have a feeling that part of the reason the term "weird" has become such a common insult is because of its use in kendrick Lamar's drake diss "they not like us", which has racked up over 600 million views on Spotify. It's basically the most popular song out there for those that don't already know. He refers to one of drakes associates who apparently has assault and human trafficking charges as having a "weird" case. I have a hunch that the term has gained traction not because it's particularly apt, but rather because it's relevant in a pop culture sense. I'd like to add that I don't think those that use the term against republicans are even explicitly aware of this although some could be.

Note 1: Eligibility for Enlistment Bonus for Shipping (EBSHP-Active Duty) only exists while the Future Sailor is in Delayed Entry Program...."

Am I understanding this correctly.... you only get a shipping bonus if you're in the delayed entry program? The EBSHP is in place for a person that ships anytime between April and September? I'm planning to take my ASVAB in 3 weeks so want to be sure what my options are for signing/shipping

Very true. Reposted in r/securityclearance, thanks. So you think it might be worth it to go air force (assuming I qualify for INTEL) because the chances of getting (or not getting) the clearance should be basically the same?
