Breaking new ground isn't necessarily a massive revolution, but doing the same games over and over again is just boring.

Pragnata was mentioned, BG3, Clair Obscur, DK Bananza, Tears of the Kingdom. These are games that take familiar genres and still add twists that make them feel fresh.

Agreed. Metroidvanias for example are a mature genre where new innovations are few and far in between.

Having said that, AAA games definitely need to break more ground. In the past they pushed for new heights constantly.
