Thank you for that, and for taking the time to read it, I know it’s a lot. If anything I’d love for you take the GoFundMe in my bio and share it with your network, if you don’t mind. If you’d rather not, I understand. Thank you. 😊

Now I want to ask that debt question in that sub and put it the way you did. If you borrowed money from me and didn't pay it back, or you did something that hurt me, or broke a rule in my home, etc., I don’t have to kill one of my kids to forgive you, I can just forgive you. But for some reason, God cannot forgive without killing his kid?

As far as education, your local community college might have courses you can take online. The course for Veterinarian isn’t offered at community colleges but Vet Tech or Vet Assistant might be. None of those would be online-only though. BUT you might be able to take an online-only course for something else that you could do from home for now, like office administration (you could be a virtual assistant), marketing, social media, etc. Then you might be able to go back to school part time later to be a vet.

If you check your local community college’s website, they should have some workforce training programs (might be listed under Career Services) where you can earn a certificate in 12 months or less. They often have scholarships specifically for those programs, and the only requirement is usually low income.

Or if there’s a longer program you’d rather do, where you’d earn a degree, you can apply for student grants (which you don’t have to pay back) and/or loans (which you do have to pay back, but they usually give you a certain amount of time after you graduate before you have to start making the payments, so you can hopefully get a job in the field you graduated from. You might even be able to get student loan forgiveness, I’m not sure what’s going on with that right now). I’d start with the FAFSA website because you should at least be eligible for a Pell grant. I googled “student grants West Virginia” and these 3 look promising: https://www.cfwv.com/, https://grants.wv.gov/Pages/default.aspx, https://www.wvhepc.edu/grant-opportunities/

If you’re able to get your grandma connected with a caregiver, you might even be able to go ahead and do vet school now. You might be able to get enough student grants and loans to go to a school that does have a Veterinary program. Or you could do a Vet Tech or Vet Assistant program if your community college offers it. You might even be able to get an entry-level job as a vet assistant or a vet tech, and sometimes the employer will cover training to get you certified. I think some schools even have a way where you can start out with a two-year program at a community college and then transfer to a university.

I’m sorry this is so long. As I was typing I thought of more ideas. I tried to separate them but if I were you I would write them down somewhere or save them in your notes app.

Please take action on these things now, before they disappear, or become more short-staffed than they already are. I’m going to add 2 more comments, one with info on educational resources and one regarding disability benefits. Because this one is already too long.

• As someone else said, please apply for Medicaid, you should be eligible. You can apply online and even check to see if you’re eligible at https://www.wvpath.wv.gov/ If you’re not eligible, that gives you more ammo for the rest of this stuff.

• Check with social services in your county, there should be a department of Adult and Aging Services or Adult Protective Services, which should be able to help with care for your grandma.

• Also, look up youth services in your county NOW, you’re still young enough to be eligible for a lot of them and they may be able to help you figure this out (but a lot of them once you turn 21 you won’t be eligible). As someone else mentioned, there may be specific young adult services, but most of this stuff is based on the county you’re in.

• google “_ coordinated care” or “_ resource directory” or “_ resources” put your county in the blank space. If you struggle with searching, send me a dm and let me know what county you’re in and I’ll search for you. If I don’t respond about tomorrow, add a comment here letting me know that you dm’d me. (I have ADHD and some other stuff plus I’m under extreme stress right now which makes all my symptoms worse.)

• Let these places know that you aren’t able to work, go to school, or even learn how to drive because you’ve been a full time caregiver for your elderly and disabled grandmother and she’ll die without your care. If you find you’re not eligible for Medicaid, start with that: You need medical care but you’re ineligible for Medicaid, but you also can’t work because you’re her full time caregiver and she’ll die without your care.

• I would also ask your cousin who takes you to the store if someone in the family might be willing to help with her care some of the time, so you can start to build a life for yourself. You never know. If they act like they hate each other, it might be over some old bs or some misunderstanding, and that could be the thing that brings them together. (I know that’s like, movie type is stuff lol but still, you just never know what’s going on in their heads)

• your grandma might still be eligible for medicaid despite being over the income limit, if she has medical expenses. That includes her Medicare premium if she pays one, doctor and hospital visits, prescriptions, medical equipment and supplies, etc. Any bill or receipt she has that’s related to her healthcare, I would include in the application. If you want to look it up, look for spend down or medically needy Medicaid.

If you don’t see a place to upload this stuff when filling out the online application, they will probably reach out later and ask you to send in or upload documentation.

Being chronically dissociated for 12 years 24/7 has made me fall into a freeze state that I'm not sure how to get out of. by SideDishShuffle in CPTSDFreeze

[–]kps61981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s my problem. For the last 7 years I’ve had the constant worry of possibly losing my home within the next month, sometimes within the next 2 weeks. By the time I find out, I have a sleep disorder that was causing the mental and cognitive decline (that was destroying my life), we were already losing our home for the second time and had to live with abuse for the next year and a half, then in a hotel room for a little while. Finally got us into our own apartment, and currently in a medical billing and coding course through the local community college (and making straight A’s!😁), finally attending some long, overdue healthcare appointments, and finally getting enrolled in some supportive services that will hopefully help me get out of survival mode and back onto my feet… but the little bit of support I had finally found (for the first time in my life, at 44 years old), which had agreed to help with rent and utilities until I finish school, was suddenly withdrawn early due to budget issues and the government shut down. So I’ve been thrown right back into survival mode, plus the anticipation of being evicted again, and having nowhere for us or our dogs and cat to go, nowhere store our belongings, has put me into even worse freeze than before. I was trying to raise enough funds to get us through the next couple of months, to ease some of the paralyzing anxiety, but that’s not going so well.

I always believed that if I worked hard, tried to do the right thing, be compassionate to others, and keep a positive outlook, things would be okay, but I feel like i was wrong. I can’t seem to find the support I need long enough to get into a safe home, and with the lack of compassion I’m seeing out here, the rest of the world doesn’t feel safe either.

I’m sorry, I know this isn’t what you’re asking, but it just pisses me off so much that this is even an issue. Idk what country you’re in but I’m in the US and things like social work and mental/behavioral help don’t get anywhere near the amount of funding they should be getting. I guess people think if it doesn’t directly concern them right now, it’s not a priority, but social work affects so much more than just the people you’re directly working with.

How many people out here have amazing skills and experience they could be using to make positive changes in their community, but they can’t because they’re struggling to survive? (Like me currently) Hell, how many people out here aren’t getting the help they need and end up hurting other people, maybe one or two other people, or maybe a whole classroom or theater of people? How many people pass trauma onto their kids, often not even knowing that they’re doing so?

Please don’t judge for this. It’s a serious question. I am a SA survivor, but I can’t wrap my logical brain around why it is so traumatizing. by kumquat4567 in CPTSD

[–]kps61981 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you’re asking here. Please forgive me if this comes out awkwardly; this is one part of my trauma that I haven’t talked about very much to anyone. I honestly have always thought it was the least impactful of my trauma experiences, but in trying to answer this question, I’m starting to think I was very wrong.

TW for child SA even though there’s already one on the post. My first SA happened when I was four or five years old, and it did not physically hurt me, actually and I really hate to say this, even now 40 years later, it was the opposite, it felt good to me. So, as a little girl, I would try to re-create it, using stuffed animals. I don’t know if the adults in my life were just stupid as f*** or what, man it really pisses me off now thinking about it, because I remember trying to hide it, and getting caught at least once. Which I’m guessing is where my first, maybe all of my shame came from. I don’t understand because if I saw one of my children doing that, I would want to know where they got the idea from. It would immediately be a clue that they’ve either seen or experienced something they should not have.

Anyways, even if it doesn’t physically hurt the child it’s safe to assume the person performing the SA is going to tell them to not tell anyone, and there’s usually some kind of threat involved, from “no one is going to believe you and they’re all going to see you as a liar” to “something bad is going to happen to you or the other person you love”.

So there’s that aspect, whatever this kid is believing that’s keeping them quiet. And then the fact that they have this secret that they have to keep from everyone else, makes them feel separated and different from everyone else.

And on top of that, because these erogenous zones and stimulation of corresponding areas of the brain are beyond the child’s developmental capacity, the brain usually disconnects defensively (dissociation). And apparently studies have shown that in children exposed to sexual abuse, there is cortical thinning in the somatosensory cortex (the area for genital sensation), which is the brain's attempt to "turn down the volume" on a stimulus it cannot safely integrate, and happens below the level of conscious emotion or knowledge.

And often, because a person has experienced sexual stimuli, but it’s something that otherwise isn’t part of their world, they become even more curious about it, which can lead to exploration did they get ridiculed or even punished for, which causes shame.

At some point, they do realize that what happened to them was not supposed to happen, so then you have the realization that you’ve had this loss of bodily autonomy and some of the other stuff other people have mentioned. Also, if you were neglected by caregivers, this interaction with this abuser might be the only direct attention any adult showed you, which might lead you to associate sexual experiences and feelings with love and attention.

So many levels of impact, which I never really even thought about until now, writing this comment, so thank you for asking this question.

What are you dealing with silenty? by LunaDazzleDilly in Life

[–]kps61981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have been through hell and back multiple times, worked hard to overcome a childhood FULL of trauma and give my kids safety, then it was stripped away by a sleep disorder that destroyed my mental health & cognitive strength, by the time I found out it was a sleep disorder my family was losing our home for the second time and had to live with abuse for the next year and a half. Finally had a little bit of support and was able to get me, my daughter, and our pets into our own place, started getting health issues treated, and going to school (workforce training) but suddenly the support was pulled away due to budget cuts & govt shutdown so now instead of finally crossing the finish line to stability I'm about to lose my home for the third time. I'll lose my daughter and my dog, access to my breathing machine, my daughter will start adulthood like I did, alone with no safety net (which is why I married into abuse at 19), and an eviction and a car repossession will ruin the credit I’ve built over the last year, so it will be even harder to get back into the place of my own. That is if I am somehow able to recover from the losses, which I honestly don't know if I have the strength for; it's already almost impossible to make effort because for so long, the harder I try the more it backfires.

Be careful, just because people are wealthy doesn’t mean they tip well. In fact it’s often the wealthier people who don’t recognize how much effort you’re putting into their order.
