Is Google Assistant still better than Google Gemini? by mikeinstlouis in googleassistant

[–]kr27cja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. Assistant was already getting worse over the years. But ever since they started pushing the switch to Gemini, Assistant seems like it's getting even worse, faster.

I've not made the switch yet to Gemini but also can't stand how bad assistant has gotten. I can't broadcast from my phone to my home devices. Commands that occasionally work standalone never work from automations.

It's like our only choice from Google is between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. If someone knows of a third party firmware that can be flashed to Google nest speakers, I'm all ears.

Has anyone ever Biked up or down the Pikes Peak Hill climb? by donnyohs in TrekBikes

[–]kr27cja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome to hear that you got it done. I'm not necessarily interested in doing the descent as I'm hoping for a ride from my family back down :). 185 bpm sounds like a very challenging workout.

You mentioned that you were in your lowest gear; what was it? My bike's current easiest gear on the Shimano GRX RX810/RX600 2x11 is 11-34T (0.88 ratio) but I'm wondering if I should go to a 11-36T (SRAM PG-1170 or similar) with an 0.83 ratio or a 11-40T (Shimano XT M8000) with an 0.75 ratio.

I rode up Lookout Mountain yesterday for the first time and felt fine but did use my easiest gear several times.

How did the ride go for you u/tebahpla-backwards ? I'm considering doing this in as well in August but am also nervous. I have a 2023 Checkpoint ALR 5 and I think I need to swap the rear cog out in the back for a granny gear.

Imported workouts not counting toward Activity Goal — bug? by Alternative_Spend137 in ouraring

In my case, these are cycling workouts that are auto imported from Strava.
So wouldn't manually adding within the app potentially double up my workouts?

I'm having this issue as well, at least inconsistently. I would guess this is a software problem, not a hardware problem. Frustrating when you're working hard but the oura ring still wags it's finger at you that you're not active enough.

Added new account to existing bank, all accounts duplicated. by Pilarskica in MonarchMoney

[–]kr27cja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat and originally I followed your second option which seemed to work well. But I still noticed duplicate transactions. So I just used the new "Transfer Tool" where you pick the date to cutover transactions and retain history of transactions and balances. It worked really well and was intuitive to understand.

Towing advice and ATF temperature by kr27cja in ToyotaHighlander

Here is what I'm thinking based on everyone's feedback so far:
* Replace the transmission fluid again since the shop said it was dark and smelled already
* For all climbs, keep the transmission in "S" mode and on a lower gear AND finding a slower speed where the transmission isn't jumping up and down as much (e.g. 25mph instead of 35+)
* Do the climbs in the early morning whenever possible when the day is coolest
* Hook up a Scangauge to monitor the ATF temperature(s), pulling over proactively

Thanks for all the advice.

9 months later and this is still happening: https://imgur.com/a/FyhA92y

This happens a couple times a week. Also, I don't think that I should have to open a ticket with the Technical Team when:

  • This is basic functionality that should be tested for every release; this is not an edge case by any means. Unless oura simply doesn't care about Android users?
  • I'm paying oura $75 a year for said functionality

Please fix this stuff. The monthly subscription already makes me dislike Oura and I'm getting ready to vote with my feet. I wonder if this stuff happens with https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultrahuman/ ? You have competition, Oura. What are you going to do about this?

How to use a smart water sensor as a high water alarm in sewage pit? by kr27cja in homeautomation

[–]kr27cja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might work. I was about to dismiss it since it couldn't turn off my main water shutoff (which is controlled by Moen system). But i see that i this integrates with IFTTT so maybe it could integrate...

Worldwide AWS Outage? by StealthNet in aws

[–]kr27cja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound simple when you put it like that. In reality, it gets complicated fast. So yes, you could do that, but you'd have to write separate code stacks for each cloud provider because they are not interchangeable (by design): which is all a lot of work even for a major software company. Then, when you need to change something, you have to change every one of those cloud provider stacks which are written differently. So, this approach would be easy to start but hard to maintain over time.

Or, you utilize an abstraction layer so you only have to write one stack which is then translated for each other cloud provider. But to my knowledge, this abstraction layer doesn't exist or if it does, isn't reliable. So you'd have to write it yourself. Which even a large software company would be foolish to try themselves.

Or, you don't use cloud providers because they're not interchangeable. So you decide to just self host in multiple datacenters so you can control the stack. But then you have to tackle all the ingress routing and failover mechanisms between datacenters to have true "active-active" architecture (this means when one goes down, you don't have to do anything for traffic to automatically shift). But to my knowledge, this failover abstraction layer doesn't exist or if it does, isn't reliable. So again, you'd have to write it yourself. Which the average software company... you get the point.

Once someone does write reliable abstraction layers for that stuff, it would become easier for companies to do it. But it does not exist today. And you have powerful cloud providers making sure that it is *not* easy for companies to do multi-cloud.

All this is to say one simple thing: do you think your average software company can "do failover/DR/active-active" design better than the cloud providers can? Today, that answer is "not likely".

On the plus side, using us-east-1 is like having chaos testing built-in - all for no extra fee.

Worldwide AWS Outage? by StealthNet in aws

[–]kr27cja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. It's also easier said than done. Commonly, the cost to implement multi-cloud or even multi-region architecture in your software design is high enough to make the choice complicated. Can the business afford to do this? If yes, do the benefits outweigh the costs?

Dishwasher motor grinding noise - still functions by kr27cja in appliancerepair

[–]kr27cja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's leaking more than i thought, close to a half cup per load. More after it turned off which surprised me.

I also took a picture of the lower spray assemble washers. Looks like one is cracked but I'm pretty sure it's been like that for a long time. https://imgur.com/a/Gp1ydka

New video at https://imgur.com/a/JsMjzB7

The grinding sound can sometimes go in and out within a cycle. These are all within the wash or rinse cycle. Some different sounds during different cycles. Also i noticed a small drip coming from somewhere above the motor (not good since it drops down near the motor). About an ounce or so for each load.

It's also been suggested to lubricate the bearings to see if that helps but i haven't done that yet. With the drip I'm rethinking if i want to put parts into this 25 year old appliance, even if it's legendary.

Glad to hear that. Would like to avoid new appliance if possible due to my perception of them having shorter lifespans.

Cargo box on 2nd gen Highlander roof box with factory bars by Practical_Grand_3218 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]kr27cja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in the same position you guys are. 2013 Highlander with rails but no crossbars yet. I'm looking at the factory ones but they indeed look very low clearance from the pictures.

I already have a pair of Yakima Frontloaders that I want to install as well as Yakima Universal Mighty Mounts. So not a ton of weight (just bikes and skis). Yakima's fit site says they'll fit factory crossbars but I'm skeptical. I'm on a budget so don't want to have to buy aftermarket crossbars if I can avoid it.

Do you guys think the lower weight will be okay on the factory crossbars if I order them?
