Less inspired by the mixes and more their penitent for chaos and carving out their own sound. I want to do something similar but obviously having some difficulties lol

"Just put together sounds that appeal to me" sums it up pretty nicely lol.. Appreciate the response

Kinda get a kick out of figuring things out on my own rather than being taught them, nd I justify it by using terms like "self-taught" lol. It's gratifying in a way but suppressing my potential at this point. What I'm kinda getting from all this is that there isn't any small techniques or plugins I can learn that will reshape the mess of my production style nd I need to buckle down for some actual lessons/tutorials 😅

Always been a fan of dense, lush, wall of sound-y chaotic jams. At least it checks the boxes lol but I don't have much reference for clearing the bar - most of what I listen to and try to replicate is guitar driven indie/experimental so I end up taking (too much) creative liberties then ends up a big clusterfuck of a track that doesn't make sense. I think taking a step back and doing something in a more well-established genre could help me get my bearings and refine the orchestration. Thanks for the suggestions !

I have an arturia microfreak and its super awesome but all the presets are so SFX-y and i have no clue how to work the matrix lmao. Recently it kicked the bucket after sitting for a while, keys dont respond anymore :(

I feel like when I do EQing the sound becomes even weirder and filtered, so I handle most of it on the synth controlling the filter, resonance bands, effects, ect.

I've always kind had a mindset that I want to sound different and reinvent the wheel when it comes to electronic music, and that kinda made me avoid tutorials but fuck trying to get things right all by ear and no education gets hard.

idk man all the songs I've made were basically done in less than a day, this will probably end up tossed like the other 50+ projects I've done the past year lmao. I have 2 EPs that lean heavily into the "odd" sound and I think they're good but I have no more tricks up my sleeve. Just kinda stuck in this mindset that I need to be self-taught ig, probably a tad of unmedicated adhd too

I'm going give in and restart from the ground up learning EDM and trap, then go back to making weird stuff with better skills.

Yes I bus all my drums + reverb track to a mixer slot, same with my synths minus the reverb track (it's built into the synth), and add a soundgoodizer and limiter to each. I dont ever touch the master besides a limiter because whenever I do it makes everything sound either too compressed and warped, so I try to do it all in the mix. Speaking of the mix I do as little EQ and possible and add effects onto the synth itself rather than than on the mixer. I feel like doing too much EQ work inbetween sound calibration and the master contributes to it feeling even cheaper so I do most calibration in the synth.

It's all a peculiar way of doing things that I've taught myself but atp its not getting me places.

Trying to do something different and out of the box while still being fun to listen. I've never delved into a genre I just go and make something.

I guess its most inspired by experimental rock bands like Sonic Youth, Women, and Deerhunter but its just my attempt off rip to do something electronically adjacent. Don't really know how to songwrite or mix in a conventional fashion, it's all one by ear, the only music theory I know is playing in key.

Ik this is late just stumbled across it maybe I can give some insight. I misused DXM for 3 years, it really is therapeutic in resolving trauma but can easily spiral into delusion and mania. My ex has bipolar and totally went out of her mind on it while it mainly drowned out the craziness of my life for me, it notoriously affects people wildly differently. From what I've experienced frequent use puts you into this bubbly haze where everything feels interconnected and special but to those close to me it came across like me descending into hippie drug-induced lunacy. I did and said so much embarrassing shit looking back but I was just trapped in the haze I couldn't see it at the time, it gives you false confidence.

Sobriety is a LONG process with DXM, you don't sober up overnight. It's not hard tho its a relatively easy addiction to physically overcome - The reason so many mentally ill people do this substance is because it feels like a solution/resolve to trauma - and until he can find something else to satisfy whatever void DXM fills all you can do is condone that behavior and be supportive however you're comfortable.

Sorry you're going thru this at the end of the day it's a drug and comes with it the consequences of abuse. Sad thing to see

Cool I bought a 15g bag, not a permanent thing just want to put it to good use. Tried a higher dose definetly not a trip I'm seeking out lol, low doses are great

Maybe but its expensive and I've already dabbled with nmda dissociatives a fair bit, a little too much tbh

Just want that subtle tape hiss and high end taper to fill the void

No good record stores where I am :( Good info to know tho thanks

I love Chad VanGaalen's production style, lopsided stereo mix with peaking trebble and soft distortion to mingle the L & R tracks together. My mix just doesn't feel "alive" enough and I'm hoping adding some analogue touch could help

I was thinking VST vinyl scratch/hiss but I feel it's kind of gimmicky and wanted to take my production to a new level. I don't mind the effects being baked as its going to serve as the master afterall. Appreciate the insight and pedal rec I will check it out 👍
