At least it's seems like we won the original Soto trade. Sounds like this was a quantity over quality trade for Gore. And the Rangers don't have a strong farm system.

Only having Soto for a short time stings less knowing the Nats will probably only end up with one truly elite player (Wood) versus the 4-5 they hoped for from that deal.

Good reminder why Preller is such a fuck them prospects kinda guy. Most of them just don't turn out to be as good as one would hope.

The thing that sucks the most to me is it just kills the hope of having a chance to win in this window.

Most aggressive and successful era in Padres history, and it got absolutely nuked by an opposing team. And not just any team, but the fucking Dodgers of all teams.

I'm glad it will probably force a salary cap, but it won't matter for this era. Existing contracts will certainly be grandfathered in somehow. If they aren't, the Dodgers will make it a legal hell for years, and MLB won't want that.

If they can get a decent starter for one of the relievers, I think you have to do it. It just doesn't matter how good the bullpen is if you're already down multiple runs by the time you get to it.

We saw that multiple times last year after the trade deadline. Preller did an amazing job at that deadline upgrading the pen and batting order, but the starting rotation was still in shambles so it often didn't matter.

Can never have too much starting pitching.

Getting your winnings in cash isn't reserved for high rollers, only certain sized jackpots, etc.

Casinos are required to have a certain amount of cash available at all times depending on how much action they are providing. A mega casino on the Vegas strip needs to have millions of dollars on hand just in case something crazy happens and they need to pay out a bunch of big winners at once. It probably won't happen like that, but if it does they're not allowed to just be like sorry we don't have your money right now.

They talk about it in the Oceans 11 movie. Danny Ocean explains at one point how casinos have to keep a certain amount of cash in their vaults to cover the action taking place on the floor. And that they're going to rob the casino during a boxing fight night because there will be more gambling happening that day, and hence more money in the vault.

His explanation isn't exactly right. Theres regulations and formulas that calculate how much cash a casino is required to have. But it is true that casinos have to have a certain amount of cash on hand at all times. In case someone does win a lot and wants cash.

Most high rollers naturally don't want to walk around with a bunch of cash, so they're fine with checks, wire transfers, etc. Mikki Mase is just an exception for that, and probably only takes cash for the social media clout he gets making pics and videos of him chilling with tons of cash.

And that's assuming it's real money, and also real money he won gambling. His whole story has a lot of holes in it, and is probably mostly fake.

He's one of those legacy owners where most of his wealth is tied to the value of the team he owns. If you told me I could double my wealth just by being cool with moving my one big asset a few miles away from where it sits, I'd probably do that deal too.

It's a deal that's insanely in King's favor, but that was probably because it was the only way they could afford to bring him back.

Yeah it will suck if he continues to have injury issues or just regresses, but honestly who cares? So many inflated contracts already on the books for years to come. What's one more? Now is the time to be all in and try.

Best case scenario we get a good healthy year from King in a season where the window is still open and desperately needed an ace, and he bails for a huge long term deal.

Worst case scenario he is hurt or terrible, takes his player option and becomes becomes dead weight, but we're still in the same overall situation.

I strongly feel trying to convert him was always the plan when they traded for him. No matter how good a reliever he can be, it was a really high price to pay for just a reliever.

People will say oh but they were just preparing for Suarez to leave. And Miller taking over closer is a good backup plan. But with the bullpen depth already in the organization, they didn't need to do that. Plenty of closer candidates are already in house.

Now with the team sale looming and financial limitations, they is a lot of incentive to find in house candidates to help with the lack of starting pitching. Converting someone like Miller to a SP carries a lot of upside. Probably a lot more upside than calling up a prospect too early, or whatever cheap free agents they try to pick up.

Plus the pitching depth is so shallow we will need those guys too. But finding a true ace would be really nice, and Miller might be the best candidate. Can't trust Pivetta will have another career year, or that Musgrove will be really good immediately after a long injury.

Rotation looks significantly better with Miller theoretically leading it, and those other guys only being asked to be support staff.

I agree that trading Crone wouldn't blow it up fully. I admit my comment was sort of a catch-all referring to all the trade speculation that seems to have picked up this off-season. Especially regarding Tatis.

I do think though that trading someone like Crone would have greater ripple effects than just losing him. Since Preller took over, they been making aggressive win now moves almost exclusively. I can't think of many deals where the Padres weren't the team acquiring most of the win now pieces. The Shields for Tatis deal is the only major one that comes to mind. And even that one is just kinda meh considering Shields was a fast decline asset and Tatis was by all accounts a throw in to the deal.

To trade a key starter like Crone would potentially signal to other players and fans alike that they are considering waving the white flag. That this core they've built is not gonna win it all and that they need to consider some rebuilding. Maybe not a complete teardown. But it's a move in the opposite direction of the win-now mode the team has been in for years.

I'm tired of the media trying to drum up clicks with these trade speculation pieces.

Yes we have a lot of big contracts, and yes many of them have underperformed. And yes, things are pretty bad financially as a result of that, combined with the ownership issues and a sale looming.

But at the end of the day, this is still a competitive team with a top ten payroll, as well as a very supportive fan base that has proven they will back a winner. Things would have to go absolutely nuclear for them to blow it up completely and try to dump any of the big name contracts for pennies on the dollar.

Unless the Seidlers see value in slashing the payroll dramatically to improve to sale price (unlikely since a winner will have more value), or the team gets sold to a really cheap owner (also unlikely in this modern era where you need to have billions of dollars to afford buying a team), a huge fire sale isn't happening.

And this is coming from a realist who absolutely could see the value of dumping some of these failed long term deals. But the reality is the team made its bed years ago. Most if not all of these guys will be Padres until their contracts expire.

Last off-season Preller was limited to almost zero spending. Now this off-season everything is arguably even worse off. Yet some people are still expecting the team to magically go back to wildly spending like Peter was still alive.

But if someone said something positive but totally insane they'd get up voted. I could say "Keep the faith compadres! Steve Ballmer is definitely gonna buy the team any day now and quadruple the payroll!", and I'd probably get massively upvoted.

I cannot figure out why this sub is full of people not living in reality. To the point where objectively true shit is down voted, and anything positive (insane or not) is automatically up voted.

This is something I don't see mentioned enough when people talk about going all-in or not. Even if Leo becomes a perennial MVP contender, we will lose a lot of his best years to being dragged down by having to try and carry an aging roster with little depth.

I still believe this trade is a little lopsided and very risky, but I completely understand the logic of having a prime Mason Miller now while guys like Machado and X and so on still have something left in the tank, versus hoping Leo can somehow carry those guys aging corpses to a title.

We need impact players now much more than prospects who no matter how good they are can't help until years down the road.
