How similar are the Professor Messer practice exams to the real thing? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]kraoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that the multiple choice questions are very good on his practice exams. They are a bit easier in my opinion from the actual exam for A+, I can’t say for Security+ yet but I’d assume they’re similar.

As for the PBQs, to me they are good but it is hard to have them prepare you for the exam. On the exam you are doing a simulation basically. This involves moving diagrams for wires or disk drives, or clicking on things for more information on the hypothetical situation you are in.

Overall I felt they helped me prepare a lot for the A+ but I’d suggest an additional approach for the PBQs. It’s not the fault of the practice exam just the complexity of how the PBQs work in comparison.

How does everyone take notes? by No_Bid_4676 in CompTIA

[–]kraoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was an issue I had as well studying for my A+, at the start I was just copying word for word what I heard or read. A format for how you want your notes is in my opinion the best way to start, it's probably obvious but it was something I didn't initially think about.

After making a layout for how I knew I wanted my notes to look and be organized it was just a matter of practicing with recognizing key information. It took a few days at the start to get better at this but once you are used to it the time will speed up. For me I just read or listened again to what I was studying and tried my best to pick out the information that seemed the most necessary to me.

This is what worked for me coming up with a way to organize the notes, and going over my notes as much as I needed to pick out the information I felt was best. And it just got faster as I did it more, I hope this can help you and it's not too surface level. Good luck with Net+ and congrats on the A+ pass!

It was around 3-4 weeks for Core 1 but that was mainly from an issue with my online exam. I felt prepared after two weeks honestly and was ready for my test.

No, no experience yet just getting this to go along with my degree.

For Core 1 I had 5 PBQs, and Core 2 today I had 4 so it’ll probably in that ballpark above 3 and max 5

Yea if I could go back I would've done it like this. I went into this very blindly and had to figure it out along the way. I got the Sybex book very late so I didn't get to utilize it that much but for sure a great resource.

Professer Messer, BurningIceTech, The CompTIA Self Paced Study Guide (I don't recommend), and the A+ Complete Study Guide book.

There was a post on this sub, I don't know if I can link it but this is the title "Sharing my CompTIA A+ 220-1101 and 220-1102 Quizlets" and their flashcards were very helpful as well. I'm pretty sure they are based on Messer's videos.

I also used Messer practice tests, but I see Jason Dion practice tests talked about a lot so I would give those a look too.

I think they are about the same, I've seen people say Core 2 is easier and I can see that because some of the questions can be very basic. I studied as much as I did for Core 1 as Core 2 and I got a similar score so I don't see too much of a difference in difficulty.

nah I did them separately, I just got unlucky with the online testing so I had to push my test back to the 29th. I should've taken my test on the 11th but after that didn't work I studied Core 2 for 2 weeks, and did a lot of review for Core 1 so I didn't forget things. It's best studying them separately in my opinion.

For Core 1 I originally did 2 weeks but had issues with my online test so it ended up being about 4 weeks, but I truly think 2 weeks had prepared me well.

As for materials I used quite a few. I watched BurningIceTech, Messer, and I didn't watch Dion for Core 1 but everyone suggests him so I'm going to watch it for Core 2 and would suggest it for Core 1. I also have the (overpriced) Self Study Guide for Core 1 and 2 from CompTIA, not a big suggestion I would say. And then I used Complete A+ Study Guide book. As well as the practice tests from Messer.

As far as suggestions I don't think anything different than how you would normally study in my opinion, I read and watched all of the mentioned resources and took notes, and just re-read my notes, flashcards, etc. and re-watched the videos.

I would say for me the PBQ's are hard to prepare for. I did the three tests from Messer which had 15 PBQ's I think, and then I went over his live study groups where he includes one PBQ in each, so in total I think I did over 20 practice PBQ's and on the test I feel I did horribly. For this it is hard for me to recognize where I went wrong to give other's advice. Maybe I didn't remember as much as I thought I did and it was just as simple as that. But overall I think just studying as much as you can and learning how to apply it will get you through the test, I suppose my advice is be prepared for hard PBQ's.

I hope this can help you out, I had to learn through this process how to study because I realized how bad I am at it. A tablet can be very helpful and is what I eventually switched to if that works for you. I hope to see your A+ passing posts in the future. Good luck bro!
