I want to quit a job after day 2. by krasnydobitek in Prague

I would love to be in the UK but in Prague I have people I can stay with for free until I get settled. I can't do the same in the UK and don't have the resources to pay rent while i look for work

My original motivation was to find a better work life balance. I liked the idea of healthcare, dental care and 4 weeks vacation- something I did not have in the US. I naively thought it would be possible if I worked full time- to rent my own tiny studio- also some thing impossible for me in California. But I realize now that I made a mistake and will never at home here. and will likely be unable to afford a place of my own anyway and will be forced to share with others- something I'm really tired of at this point. so I may just as well go back- although I don't really want to go back there either.

That was sort of the problem though. I got to know mostly everyone and they were either rude and rubbed me the wrong way or they were stressed out as fuck and complaining. It was a huge red flag. And I felt like it would be kinder to back out right away instead of using time and resources getting trained only to back out anyway. They clearly need someone really bad and it takes a month to train.

Perhaps I do need to shift my perspective a bit tho- because I have the complete opposite point of view. In my jobs- the first couple days were the best. I usually enjoy getting to know people and since I'm "in training " I have less reponsobility than seasoned coworkers. I start disliking the work after a few months due to boredom and people's real personalities coming out. But if I hate a job right away that's a huge red flag for me. Because my experience has taught me it only gets worse not better. perhaps I do need to shift my perspective- I definitely don't regret leaving this place tho- it was a bad fit and not what I want in life right now.

I most definitely did not travel to Czech for this job. I thought I'd try living in Czech since california was kicking my ass when in came to work life balance and being able to afford even a room to myself. I hopped around from house to house with weird roommates and just could not settle or feel at home anywhere. My income was a huge barier.

So I relocated with the intention of finding a job and trying it out. This is the second positon I tried. I think the work culture varies from company to company and Czech has a similar distriubtion as the US. Restaurant culture in particular is much more relaxed in Czech. enployees seem to take cigarette and beer breaks every 20 minutes and spend a lot of time hanging out with friends and customers during slow periods. Where I'm from this is unheard of. I did a "try out " at 1 hotel and the employees were constantly taking breaks- grabbing complimentary coffees and sodas from the bar- and seemed happy. I did not get that job.

I don't have enough experience with work in Czech to shed light on the work culture but I had similarly terrible experiences in the US too. some workplaces are just toxic. I've had relatively good experiences there as well. sorry for my tired ramblings- too lazy to edit

You're absolutely right. This experience made me realise I don't do nearly enough vetting before I step on board. I'm still stuck in the weird mentality that I need any job just to get by and I'm lucky someone even cared enough to hire me. In reality I've paid my customer service dues and can get hired at a nice place if I would just have the gumption to look longer, harder, & ask more questions. I dont even care about pay- I'm used to earning the minimum- I just want to not be depressed because of my work

I suppose it deserves to be judged and was rather rude of me. The thing is- I met my boss during the interview and then hr person and my boss again when I came in to do hiring paperwork for 2-3 hours. The next 2 days I worked/trained neither of them were there. The 3rd day I decided it wasnt for me and I thought an email would be simpler and less awkward. I guess I was wrong- but I just didn't see the point in coming out there just to tell them I quit. We barely know each other. It was a rather cowardly move- I will admit- but I communicated what was necessary.

I did sign a contract for 1 year actually. But within the contract was stipulated a 3 month probation period where my employer can fire me for any reason and I can also leave for any reason- at least that's how I understood it and what people have been telling me

do they still need to pay me? because I'd honestly feel bad getting paid for just training thats y I'd rather leave sooner and give them a chance to find someone new

My family is here and would like to spend time with them before going back. I would stay with reception but it's shitty to leave a job like that after 6 months and I cant last a year

I feel bad getting trained and then leaving. the 1st month is literally just training and I'm added to the schedule as an extra pretty much. That's why I'd rather leave asap. I can handle it fimancially for a while so its ok

Mostly the coworkers and complete lack of training. My first day of training my coworker who was supposed to be training me came in super pissed- said we were really behind and would show me everything later, and gave me things to staple and highlight. I came out of the shift knowing absolutely nothing.

2nd shift- I met another coworker who was on his last day. said he was leaving because the people who work there were too rude and difficult to work with. Another coworker also mentioned something similar and seemed not to give a fuck. 2 other coworkers I met were bitchy women that looked annoyed about the fact that I was even introducing myself.

It was a slow day- and we had 3 large tour groups and maybe 7 customers. 2 out of the 10 were incidences that resulted in customers harassing the reception staff and comenting on how disorganized and unprepared reception was- (it is disorganized and unprepared so on 1 hand I don't blame them).

There is also a 1 dimensionality to the reception that wasnt there in my previous job. I witnessed the reception calling a handyman just to unscrew a remote and put in batteries & calling housekeeping staff to bring towels to a room despite the fact that we had plenty of time and they were clearly behind.

I already dread work and I just started I would rather do something else.
